personal protection
One of my common defenses that I use with my wife when she wants to know why I have so many guns is the "personal protection" thing. I often say "you never can tell"...
I have mostly hunting shotguns and a couple of pistols. A 44mag Taurus and a EAA Witness 9MM. This gives me some pretty good devfensive weapons, but I am thinking about getting something a little more offensive. I am not very knowledgeable about what's out there but it seems that something like an AR15 is a pretty good choice in an offensive weapon.
I'd love to hear suggestions.

Forgetting Manufacture, Bullet wt. etc., which cal., .357 mag, or .44 special would you pick for a vehicle carry weapon. No Semi autos for the moment. THX HAWKSHAW 0 -

Useing an AR15 in your home is one of the very last absolute resort that you should use(any rifle for that matter). Things you have to worry about the most is over penetration. Which means the chances are high that the .223 round will rip through every wall in your home puting the lives of your family at risk and also your neighbors.
I happen to agree with Fireseven on the shotgun issue, you can get something like a Remington 870 and turn it into a criminals worst nightmare. This would more then likly be your best option, I'm sure others here will agree or have even better ideas.

I own a Nova for hunting and it easily hangs with the 870, both models are extremly rugged and dependable and will function in the worst conditions.

12 gauge is probably the most effective tool inside a house. An AR would be cool if you were living in Iraq.0 -
My personal favorite for home protection is a Mossberg Cruiser 12 ga. w/18" barrel and pistol grip. Think about it, if someone is breaking in your house, your adrenaline is pumping, you are probably going to be shaking a little. The scattergun will be most effective. I keep mine loaded with (6) 3" magnum #4's. I agree the 00 buck is an excellent choice as well. 0 -
Since this is the unusual case where you are going to be on the offensive then I suggest the same thing as the others: A 12 gauge shotgun. You can go with a pump or auto loader and even an old coach gun can be called into service if need be. 00 buck is great for hunting and is the defacto military load due to its better penetration and ability to bust through brush but for the average civilian I'd suggest a load of #4 buck.

I have two Mossbergs. 12ga 590 for me and a 500 16 ga for my wife. I thought it was better to have her a 16 ga that she will shoot rather than a 12ga that she is scared of. Both are loaded with #4 and both have only the pistol grip. My concern was swinging a full stock in a hallway. As Don said, I don't want to rely on something that I have to aim.
Hopefully they will just grow old in there storage area.

I agree totally with the shotgun idea. However, I differ on the 00 buckshot load. In NRA tests and my own tests #4 buck gives many more hits on target. In my business I kept a 20"coach gun 12 ga 3" MAG loaded with #4 buck. It would put 40 pellets on a human sillouette at 25 yards.
