Building an AK-47.

Of all the rifles I own, my Vector AK-47 is one of my favorites. Reliable as anything, fairly accurate, easy to customize, and fires cheap ammunition. I've field stripped mine on numerous occasions and I find them very easy to work with since they aren't that complex. I've wanted to build one of my own (using a pre-existing legal receiver of course), and I have been looking into assembling one.

I know the parts I need: Receiver, parts kit, fire control group and bolt if the parts kit doesn't include those for some reason. My main question is where I can find a guide or a manual that would teach me how to connect the receiver to the parts, and I really need to know how to assemble the actual fire control group within the receiver.

Making a custom AK would be a fun hobby. I don't expect full instructions, just a link to a book or a guide that has diagrams, instructions, etc.

Additionally, if there is a book that contrasts the semi and select fire control groups I would like to know that as well. (Don't worry folks, I'm building a semi and I don't intend or have the skills to modify the receiver.) I just want to compare the two for the hell of it. Learning to strip a full group is a skill I'd like to have so that when I turn 21 and hopefully get the cash to get a nice legal, full auto Kalashnikov I can take care of it as best as I can.

    coreware- Having built two Ak47's of my own, let me give you a few tips. Most parts kits usually come with all of the furniture,trigger group parts, bolt, gas piston, receiver cover and the barrel with all its parts attached to a cut receiver. All that you'll have to do is purchase a new receiver ( usually a milled one ) which will require an FFL transfer to a licensed dealer and have a gunsmith remove the barrel from the old cut receiver and install it on the new receiver. After that, just take the receiver cover off of the ak47 that you already have and see how everything is assembled and put your trigger group in your new gun just like it is in your other AK. You should then take it back to your gunsmith and have it correctly head spaced. Its not really that hard. One word of caution, my first parts kit was from a full auto AK47. Which is great because the full auto parts are much more heavy duty, but you'll have to exchange some of the trigger group parts to semi-auto or you'll be building an illegal class III weapon. I'm pretty mechanicaly inclined, so it was just a matter of figuring out which order all of the trigger group parts went into the receiver. AK's with select fire are much more complicated to assemble with a lot more parts. Also, make sure the new receiver is compatible with the old one ( stamped or machined and country of origin). Most new receivers come un-blued, so you'll have to get that done too. What I like most about the two AK's that I built myself is the wood on them is old and beat up and saturated with cosmoline and looks more like a gun that was used in actual combat. But, now I see parts kits on the internet that are taken off of new, never used guns. They just don't have the look that I want. Good luck! I hoped I've helped you out. 9mmberetta92
