6.5 Jap

I have a 6.5 jap rifle that has the (mum) on it and has been painted black. I was told that being painted may be ok because they were done this way to help durability in the field.The guy that I got it from got it out of the attic of a guy who brought it back from the war. As the story goes but I am not for sure.I think it is a type 38 and the barrel is about 30" long. Could you tell me about what it worth and if being painted black hurts the value.

  I collect and own several Arisaka rifles. I have never heard of them being painted black. Sounds to me, like someone is trying to pull a fast one.
  
  I could be wrong as I am only a collector and not an expert. I can tell you that if it painted black, any value will be lost. [B)]

  If you could VERY CAREFULLY try removing the paint on the stock and metal parts with mineral spirits, WITHOUT DAMAGING the original finish, it would be the best thing.
  
  Some of these old Japanese rifles have considerable value, depending on markings, originallity etc. If your able to remove the paint without noticeable harming it, MIGHT? be worth some money.
