Smith & Wesson 65-2 Information

Just got one of the subject revolvers in Stainless with a 4" barrel and 357, 6-shot. Can't find in any books. I know someone can give me some information on this revolver like value and age. Thanks. Fred

    The 65 comes in two different barrel lengths 4" square butt and 3" round butt , the 3" brings a premium. [:)]

    The K-frame M65 dates from the 1970's, & was popular among police depts because it was one of the first service revolvers in stainless steel. By the 1980's, it was obsoleted by the L-frame models like the 581 & 681, which were stronger & more modern. All of them lost favor in the late 1980's, as 9mm autos became popular. Thousands of PD trade-ins were readily available well into the 1990's.

    The PD trade-ins are at the bottom of the price range you were given; many of them were fired extensively, & small parts wear often prevents tight lock up. Excessive cleaning also may contribute to muzzle wear & poor accuracy.

    That's strange I find Police trade ins to be used very little in fact I bought a few mod 65s that were N.I.B.
    Here's a police trade in I bought recently.It's in excellent cond. with box ,papers and cleaning kit.

    As in most cases, I guess that the best answer is, "It depends."

    Some PDs only require their officers to shoot 50 rds once or twice a year, while others shoot the frap out their guns. That's why it's important that we know how to evaluate a used gun before buying it.

    Actually, the best police "trade ins" were never actually owned by a police dept. S&W (& other manufacturers) that do special runs for PD contracts usually produce several guns beyond the required amount & hold them "just in case"; after a year or 2, when they are sure that they will not be needed, S&W sells them to a distributor who has no problem selling the gun to dealers.

    crane 65-2. pinned bbl. recessed cyl. made in 1981.Hope
