I have a Sporterized Winchester 358 big bore rifle with a German mauser action. It was custom made for me by my brother in law a gun smith who worked at Kodiak Arms Company when they were located in North Haven Conn. On the Barrel it says (Win 358)on the action there are some numbers (6678) & on the part that goes into the barrel a number(N8) & on the other side of shaft the # 65 the handle that goes up & down there is some other letters BC & there is a symbal of some kind that looks a little like coat of arms or a crown. It also has a Willams ajustable site & covered peep site. This gun hasn't been fired no more than 10 times & is 100%. The blueing is beautifull & comes in a Vinal case. Can any one tell me what it is a Winhester or Kodiak. And model Thanks in advance.

    The proof marks such as the BC and the coat of arms or crown would lead me to believe it is a rifle with a Mauser action, and not a Winchester. Did your brother-in-law build the rifle while he was employed at Kodiak? Did he build it foor them or in his free time? This would dictate whether it was a home project or something built, like I said, for the company. Pictures would help a lot. Either way, it sounds like a beautiful rifle.

    The crown symbols are typical of GEW 98 WWI German rifles.

    Hi Bill, actually he & another employee made me a sporterized Winchester 94 458 Magnum. But on me next hunt it destroyed everything I shot, so I returned it to him & asked him to make me some thing smaller. (not a wise move.)Thats when he & another gunsmith made me the 358. Using a winchester barrel they made me the 358.I'm asuming he made it in their spare time. It isn't or never was a production model. I wanted to put it up for auction but don't know what to start the bidding at. It is a beatifull gun with a Monti carlo Stock. It is like new. Thanks for the info.

    The Kodiak Arms from what I know is no longer in business & my brother in law is dead. He would be 84 if he were alive. I would ask him but unfortunatly that is impossable. Thanks anyway.

    I guess some people just don't belive anything. which is OK by me. I'm going to save this message so I can show a freind of mine who said I was crazy to give back the 458 mag. Just to funny to pass up. He should get a charge out of this being a member of the NRA.

    Carlo I don't want to insult your intelligence, so don't take this the wrong way. You do know what the Winchester 94 is, right? IS a lever action rifle, with production starting in 1894. The .458 is a very powerful cartridge, and its likely that a few shots would have been enough to destroy the 94, if that is in fact what you have. If you could post pictures or send them to someone who can then that would be a big help. Again, please don't take this the wrong way. When someone says they have a gun that was designed 110 years ago chambered in a cruncher like the .458, a lot of eyebrows raise.

    Hi Bill I just tell it like it is. And your right it is a powerfull cartridge. My brother in law & his co worker made the change over & as matter of fact the same gun was featured in field & stream many years ago. They used the lever action & I shot the gun 3-4 times as well as a friend of mine who still hunts but he's also getting to old for that. They had full run of the shop. The President of Kodiak Arms at the time was a guy named (Murtha) I don't remember his first name.If I remember right we were useing a 500 grain bullet. As a matter of fact I may still have a few of them around here.Like I said I'm in my late seventies & I don't need to make up any stories. I wish he were still alive it would put a lot at rest.The gun smith who he work with also developed the 410 harpoon gun
    & was also featured in Field & Stream. If youn think I'm making this all up it's OK by me too.You won't get an argument from me.
