Hi all i was wondering is there a size limt on the size of for hunting caribu in alaska? If so what is it?

    I went to the AK fish and game sight like Snellstrom posted and the only minimum I found on rifles was you couldn't hunt them with a rimfire .22 unless they were in two special units where you could shoot them in the water with a rimfire .22, and I believe those were residents only.
    Those aren't what I would recommend for taking an animal that size. A number of western states have their regulations set at "any .22 cal centerfire". That is just a little too light. You would do well with most any kind of standard firearm, i.e. .257/25-06 w/ 120 gr. bullets. or 270/30-06 with 150's somewhere in that range is legal and USABLE. Hope that helps.

    Keep in mind where ever you hunt caribou in AK for the most part will be in Bear country.. I would suggest no less than 30-06 and I personally prefer 300 win mag.... Most the people I hunted with when I was there had either 300 mag or 338.. As alredy stated a 270 will get the job done for caribou.but.[?]...Good Luck I'm sure you will love it when you go....[8D]

    I second David b1, I hunted the Mulchatna Caribou herd last Sept and used a .270 which was fine for the caribou. We did keep a loaded Benelli in the tent at night with 3.5" buckshot. BUT, I would not go up again with a .270 just in case I run into Mr. big and furry. It is more likely he will stumble into camp than you meeting him out in the field.

    A good starting point is .300 WM and up. Remember, you will likely be a long long way from help which equates to time. Get a .300, load it up for caribou in case of bear, and load it down for whitetails. Many respected guides only go out with .375 H&H's
