Target scope mounting....need some help

I purchased a .223 Savage 12 FV (bull barrel, single shot, sythetic stock) and cannot seem to get the accuracy out of it. Sounds like a broken record question!! LOL

Using Leopold one piece base (metal, not aluminum), Leopold rings, & a BSA 6-24x40 scope. I know...cheaped out on the scope...but I just don't have the funds to spend on the high dollar scopes...sorry.

Of course, I want exceptional accuracy, but just not getting it. Have NOT started to handload, but have tried at least 25 flavors of ammo...with no luck.

Have been shooting off of bags, taking my time, REALLY concentrating...but just does not seem to have great accuracy.

Barrel is free floating in the stock.

Have placed the rifle at different points on the forend when shooting off the bags - no change.

Would scuffing up the barrel & one piece base, reattach after mixing up some two part epoxy help? I believe I am going to try this tonight...cannot hurt.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Wait until I handload?

    I wouldn't do any "scuffing". It may help to remove the scope,rings, and base and clean all mating surfaces with something like alcohol or solvent. Then replace all the parts using locktite and being extra careful to tighten all screws evenly. I don't think the recoil of the rig you're using would challenge any scope. I've had a cheap BSA contender on a 308 for two years and it's never changed zero or given any indication of shifting impact.

    Before you invest a great deal more money in ammo...why not try a different scope...anything would work. You need to eliminate variables...is it the scope...is it the gun? And YES make sure your guard screws are tight. And what do you consider poor accuracy?

    Try a different scope....would...but do not have a spare that is not mounted on something else. Hmmm...good excuse to buy a new scope?? hehe [:D]

    duckhunter-this puppy should group like the dickens. It is a single shot, bull barrelled, & sythetic stocked.

    I guess my question should be...what kind of groups COULD I achieve with this setup?

    Honestly, I do not see any reason why .5 at 100 yards and 1.0" at 200 yards would/could/should not be possible with this rifle.

    Your opinion?

    Removed scope & mounts tonight. Everything looked ok.

    Cleaned base & mounts (just in case my eyes lied to me).

    When I originally mounted the Leopuld base, the front screws are too long for the action. Need to shorten approximately .080".

    Set the base on the receiver....and did notice daylight under the front of the base. I removed base and set it back on the receiver. Moved it around...same thing...still daylight under the front. (incidently, mine uses a round front and flat rear....but I am still using a Leopuld one piece base).

    I elected to mix up a small amount of two part epoxy, mounted the base, and all is drying as I type.

    Will let you know on Monday or Tuesday how the rifle fairs at the range.

    More good rifles shoot like cr@@p because of defective scopes. If you have anything on another rifle that you have confidence in, pull it and try it. I've had a couple of BSA scopes and have been glad to be rid of them, both the high and low ends of their catalog. Find the money and get yourself a Buris fullfield II with the balistic plex and you will probably be happy. Better yet a Vari III Leupold.

    If you have other scopes mounted on guns that shoot well ...then why not take the time to remove one and mount it on the Savage....at the worse you'll have to re-sight the other gun. Having bought a gun that is known for their accuracy......that BSA would be the VERY first place I would have started. I bet you'll find that the mount work you did last night will have little bearing on the next range day. Change the scope out..........

    You mentioned daylight? under the base? Did you doublecheck to make sure you got the right base?
    I just went to the range yesterday with my 12FV and shot a 1" group @300 yds. Those rifles shoot! I got rid of two BSA scopes not long after I got them.
    Do like the others have said if the base situation isn't correct. Pull a known scope off something and use it. -Good luck

    Yes, triple checked...the base is correct. The daylight can be seen under the front portion...the rounded portion of the receiver and the front, rounded portion of the base.

    Sounds like my frustration has already been experienced by other people that have been down the same path....that is why I posted the question.
