338-378 felt recoil?
My question to some expert is, How much felt recoil will a weatherby mark V in 338-378 with a accubrake have. Will it be so bad that I will not want to shoot it again and again. I have read on other web sites that it has 46 lbs. of felt recoil but is that with the accubrake or without? Also I might as well ask this. What is a good scope for a gun that has that much recoil, and how much eye relief sould there be? thank you , Gary

The accu-brake or muzzle brake will tame the recoil but it adds another problem, noise and muzzle blast. This gun with a brake on it will damage your hearing if you are not wearing ear protection which in my opinion is impossible in hunting situations. Many guides and outfitters are becoming wary of muzzlebrakes because of hearing damage too. I've got a 338 win mag with a BOSS on it (muzzlebrake) It shoots great from the bench but the first time I shot in a hunting situation I thought my ears were going to bleed. I bought a plain tube for the BOSS which eliminates the muzzle brake, it kicks a lot more but it sounds more like a regular magnum than an ear blaster. Any good quality Leupold scope will work fine, VX-III 3.5x10 would be a great scope for your needs, other scopes will work I'm sure I just like Leupolds.0 -
As far as scopes go, Burris and Leupold will be the top two contenders. Both are tough, reliable and well backed by there makers. At our range we regularly ask folks who bring mega mags with muzzle brakes to go shoot on the other side, as far away from the group as we can get them. I suspect that you can get similar recoil reduction from a shotgun stock insert recoil absorber with only a small weight increase, also good, as with the brakes. 0 -
thanks for the advise. I like leopold as well but on this gun I was thinking maybe for a zeiss or steiner. She said that I could get one, not how much I could spend so while the getting is good I think that I will try to find a nice weatherby. I still would like to hear from somebody that has a 338-378 as to what they think of the cal. and the recoil. 0 -

It's been awhile since I've shot the caliber....it was still a wildcat when I last did. I've shot nearly every caliber ever made save for the 700 nitro. Everyone has a recoil comfort level and in my case, at my age and two bad shoulders it my 450/400. Something for you to try when you get the rifle or any big bore. I've used this to help a lot of shooters over the years get used to the recoil of the bigger bores. Stert shooting with light loads...if you re-load or can get someone to do it for you it is easier. Start with a light for caliber bullet, in your case probably a 200 grain, and shoot it slow....recoil will be minimal at this level. When you are used to that load just gradually speed it up and when you reach max velocity increase bullet weight but shoot it slow, then slowly increase velocity again. This process takes awhile but there have been very few shooters who I have used this technique with that weren't able to learn to shoot full power loads accurately. You stop at the load you can shoot most comfortably....full power or not. Do you shooting off hand to. It's how you'll hunt and recoil on the bench isn't the same as standing up. 0 -

I shoot a 338 RUM with a brake on it and recoil is very managable, about like a 30-06. If I had a blank check for a scope, I would look at a NightForce. 0 -

The 46 lbs of recoil is probably without the muzzle brake, I have a recoil calculator (in excel) that says it's 48 lbs (e-mail me if you want it).
The accubrake is probably not the greatest recoil tamer for that caliber. Most of the long range hunters/shooters that I know that use the big .338s (Lapuas, RUMs, AMs, EDGE, etc...) have custom brakes from:

Since this thread was new in 2005, I got the weatherby 340 with the answer products muzzle brake put on and a Schmidt and Bender scope. Thanks for still bringing up good info. 0
