Is the original contender more favorable than the new G2?

A guy at work is looking to sell his Contender and I am wondering what it is worth.
Frame has a serial number of 382XXX. He is selling it with a 12" 45/410 barrel and a 14" 223 barrel with a tasco 2X scope on it. The 223 barrel also has a muzzle break on it. Is this factory? Has both forends and the choke tubes / wrench. Just want to make sure I give him a fair offer. Thanks0 -

Relative to you question it really depends on what you want.
Original has adjustable trigger weight.
G2 is fixed trigger weight that can be modified by a competent gunsmith, but it is basically a fixed change that requires a gunsmith for any future change. Essentially the same as the Encore
G2 also permits the pistol to be recocked without breaking the action, and it is designed to work with higher pressure caliber chamberings, but still not as high as the Encore. However as long as the barrels for the G2 are compatible with the original Contender (and vice versa) don't expect to see any chambering that has pressures higher than what the original Contenders were designed for. I suspect that at some point they will make barrels for the higher pressure cartridges that will no work on the original ... probably similar to the blackpowder barrel made for the G2.
If you don't mind a fixed trigger weight, buy the G2 or Encore, if you want an adjustable trigger weight then look for a good used original Contender.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I have a SS contender now that doesn't have an adjustable trigger. If you cock it and don't fire and squeeze the brake open handle slightly it will decock without firing. I asked TC about this and they said it wasn't correct, and to send it to them and they would possible replace it. The only thing is they don't have originalframes now, only G2's and not in stainless. So what do I do? 0 -

I had the chance to look at the old style and the G2 both in .223. I really liked the smoothness of the action on the G2. So I went with the G2. Shoots great, problem is now I want more barrels.

Although the G2 and Encore triggers are not adjustable one can simply replace the trigger spring to get the pull desired. I recently installed a spring [#5] for a friend in his Encore and reduced the trigger pull from ~60 ounces to ~24 ounces. Mike Bellm sells the springs [$8] and has a downloadable video clip that details how to install them.

Steve. Funny thing. I too recently acquired an original stainless steel Contender, and just checked: it does what you illustrated. After the hammer is cocked, if the lever is pulled to open the action the hammer will fall into a safety block safely, it seems. But my trigger is adjustable via a small allen screw in the top forward extension of the trigger. I haven't really explored much into the mechanics of my Contender yet, but I am indeed intrigued!
