Rock Island .45
I saw a Rock Island .45 at a gun shop today and was wondering what price i should pay for a new one and whether or not they are any good. it is down to this or the springfield GI .45. thanks.

You should be able to get the Rock Island for around or under 300 bucks and from what I have seen, they are every bit the gun as the GI Springfields. I would say go with the Rock Island for the difference in price. You can always upgrade it later if you feel the need to. I have heard claims that the Rock Island's are more accurate.

I don't know what prices are in your area or "groovin's" area either, but in Northern Ohio a new Rock Island will go for about $350-375 and the Springfield GI's are $425-450
So basically I'd guess that the guns run around $50 apart most places and I suspect that the base price difference from one area to another is around $50 as well.
Have shot both and I think they are pretty much on a par with each other.
As an entry level gun I'd suggest that you go with which ever one you can get the best price on (which I suspect will be the RI). Once you've gained some profeciency then consider moving up to the higher $$$ pistols ... makes little sense to do so until your certain that you like the 1911 style pistols.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
well i am rather certain that i like them, shooting my buddy's kimber on a couple of occassions i can get the springfield for $409 probably the rock island for 325 or so. i am leaning towards the springfield, but i just wanted to know about the rock island as i have never had any experience with their products and i own a springfield xd 357.

IMHO go with the springfield much better pistol then asia made rock island 0 -
Go for the Rock Island. I bought one for myself for Christmas, guns runs flawlessly. Accuracy is good and trigger is suprizenly decent, sights are tiny and there is some hammer bite but it is a good all around gun for the money.
They run $385+ in my area.
By the way the RIA is made in the Philippines, the SA is made in Brazil.
Edit: If you go SA get the MIlspec instead of the GI Milspec. The Milspec has much better sights and a better grip safety (no hammer bite). Also the Milspec would be a great base for a custom gun down the line.

I have never been a big fan of the quality control of the Philippines firearms. The quality control of the raw materials is very hit or miss and more emphasis put on appearance than longevity.

I have a Rock Island .45. Here's my take on it - it's a good gun for the money, but you get what you pay for. Mine is a little picky on the mags it will work with and I've had a few failures to extract spent rounds properly.
As the basis for a project gun, you can't beat the price.
As a carry or home defense weapon, there's more reliable out there.
If it were a school paper, I'd give it good solid B.0 -

I have an SA Milspec, I like it a lot. It's about as accurate as I can get with a 1911 that hasn't been match graded. Before I got it I was looking at the Rock Island. I think that if you go with a known quantity you will like it but have to accept it for what it is you paid for. What you don't want to do is go with an unknown for not too many dollars less and regret it later. Rock Islands have a decent reputation but not great.

Have a Springfield compact , best outa the box accuracy I've ever seen. Picked it up NIB for less than $400 many years ago. Rock Island is good for the $250 -$300 price range, but not a Springfield.
Go for the Springfield
