ANY .45-70 HANDLOADERS?
My .45-70 came in this weekend (Gibbs Summit Frontier bolt action). Anybody got any suggestions for a good whitetail load. I ordered the dies, brass and some 300 gr. Rem JHP because they were on sale. Ken Waters lists a load of 53 grains of IMR3031 with a 300 gr. hollowpoint. This is my first .45-70. Never loaded it before. Any info appreciated.

All kinds of fun to be had with that one!!! Just make sure you don't use the load info for the Bolt Action rifles in that one. The gun was designed off the Enfield, rear locking lug design and is no where near as strong as the Siamese mauser or other BA conversions. You should be able to use the modern lever gun loads safely though, and they are pretty stout. I would recommend using the COL for the BA loads, but the powder drop should be pure modern lever levels all the way. My favorite load for the MArlin lever gun is a Bonus Bullet brand 455 grain gas checked lead round nose (only reuse the brass 3 to 4 times with these!)over a magnum lg rifle primer and about 37 grains of 4198. VERY impressive and will nearly penetrate (makes it look like a Lays potato chip!) a "1/4 piece of steel boiler plate (about "6x"6 ) at 50 yards. You can go down a ways (31 to 33 grains)and have a nice heavy target load, but I wouldn't recomend any too much more than around 37 or 38 grains. For the lever guns I always run a COL of "2.570 or even "2.550 as any longer round will not cycle through the Marlins. I would start with an uncrimped round at about "2.80 and chamber by hand (with no bolt in the gun of course)reducing the COL a few thousanths at a time until I found the origin of the rifling, and then back off a few thousandths from there. Seems as though the closer to the rifling these heavy pills start the more accurate they are. Even with my stubby little Guide Gun and 41 year old eyes, I can shoot around "1 1/2 all day with it at 100 yards as long as I don't push them too fast; then again, they only seem to open up to about "2 anyway! the good captains father recommended 55 gns. of 3031 and a 405 gn bullet for the 1886 win. and thats a handful (I got a letter from him back in the 1960's when he was writing for the amrican rifle man). the load you have listed should work well and be a little easyer on the shoulder 0 -
When Gibbs anounced their 45-70 Enfield I played twenty questions with their tech staff about how strong they thought the loadings could be developed to. They were very evasive, buffalo bores +p were a very strong NO, so much so that I never got one. I got the strong impression that it wasn't just because of the legal issues. After thinking about it I suspect that I should have been asking them about overall max pressure instead of loadings. If you can get them to quote a max pressure, then you should be able to select a similar pressure/load for the 45-70. 0 -
i would love to offer you some of my recipes for the 45-70 but i'm shooting mine out of a 12 inch bbl BFR revolver, not gonna be much help to you ... good luck with the new gun and you shouldnt have much trouble finding a good load for this cartridge, but i will caution you on the remington jhp's, at the higher velocities the jackets were seperating from the lead cores 0 -
Jason...... I do not reload 45-70, but I do have a resizing die and a seater die in that caliber. Both are new.

Anyone know where I can find a carbide sizer for 45/70?

With the slight taper to the .45-70 case, a conventional ring carbide die would be of limited usefulness. A full-length one would be rather expensive, and would still require lube.
I don't know who makes a .45-70 carbide die, but suppose one exists.
Dillon offers carbide sizing dies for .223 and .308 for $89.00 and $100.00.
