Rhetts carbine

I picked up an ammo collection with a section of wildcats. In this collection was a packet labeled "Rhetts carbine". Inside was a sample of a .30 cal. carbine shell necked down to a .22 cal. My question is whether this was ever mass produced and if so what would you shoot it out of? Thanks

  To the best of my knowledge, Melvin Johnson's "Spitfire", i.e. 30 carbine necked down to .22 Caliber. Was the only cartridge similar to what you describe that ever went into production.
  
  It was chambered in rebarreled/reworked, ex U.S. Military, M 1 Carbines.
