s&w 40

I have the chance to get a Smith & Wesson 40 tactical at a good price but wanted a 45 carry in kimber. What would be the pros and cons of the 40 cal. versa the 45 cal. not guns just bullets and performance.

    The .40 S&W has greater velocity, greater energy, less wind drift and greater average range.

    I'm amazed that this traveled from the top of the screen to the bottom with only one reply. Usually things like this get so many responses that the topic gets locked! [:)] My answer would be a bit different from jthoresen's. I'd say: ".40 S&W, less lead, higher velocity. .45 ACP, more lead, less velocity. Get the .45." [:D]

    I think the reason there are not more responses to this is because the subject has been beat to death. My question is, Why would you want to buy a smith & wesson? They make a great revovler, but I wouldn't have one of their autos. OOPS, well excecpt for the PC952-1 that I have. You shouldn't be so concerned about cal. It's what do you shoot well?

    targetshooter,go to the "Smith & Wesson Forum" and tell that to the guys in the "Semi Auto Forum".I have several S&W autos and they all work flawless and are very accurate.[:)]

    WIND DRIFT ???? I don't think many people shoot 1000 yard matches with pistols but I may be wrong. The differance between the 2 cartridges at 50 yards " the longest range I think any body but Silhouette shooter use" is less than .10 of a inch in a 20 mile wind. I don't think is much of a reason . "PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"

    The best reason to get the 40SW is that the mag can and often does hold like twice as many 40s as 45s. Yes there are exceptions, still in a personal/household defence handgun I bought the Glock 22 and retired my S&W M59, 9mm. I generally think of it like this: The 40SW will do everything a 9mm will do, only better, and preform almost as well as the 45ACP with twice as many at ready. Still the above advise as to "what do you shoot the best?" is probably the advise you should listen to. If in doubt go to your local range and see if you can shoot some of the pistols that you think you would like to own. You may be surprised.

    Thanks for the help. The plan was for a carry gun not a target shooter in a 3 1/2-inch barrel. I do not get to check in as much as I would like so I haven?_Tt had the opportunity to read the discussion on .40 & .45 & 9mm & so on. I traded my last and only full-size .40 for a 1911 .45 and love it. It is just hard to carry and I wanted something bigger than my kel-tec .32 for when I am out of shorts a t's. The s&w tactical 40 comes at a price I cannot turn down and it was my father-in-laws. So it is buy the .40 now or give the money later. I was just trying to see if there was a big diff. in the two. Or what people thought
