Range pistol for the wife
If this has been covered I apologize. I'm looking for some direction on a decent/affordable pistol to introduce my wife into handguns. She has never fired one. Wondering if I should go with a .22 and if so what are the better ones I should buy. Thanks for the help.

IMHO I would go with a 22 Ruger auto browning BUCKMARK or S & W K22. remember you want to make it fun to shoot make sure you get her ear muffs or plugs. 0 -
If I was going to buy a .22 pistol it'd either be a Browning Buckmark or a Walther P22. You may want to take your wife to the store with you and let her handle each .22 pistol and let her decide what fits her hands the best that way you can't go wrong.

Every Beretta I've ever had anything to do with was a very fine fire arm, shotguns and handguns both. Still you can hardly go wrong with a Ruger MkII, even if everyone has one. The earlier version with the semi luger grip has a smaller grip then the newer 45 style gun and may be more comfortable for someone with smaller hands. Take her to the range and rent several pistols a see what she likes. My range could set her up with everything from 22 to 45 to try, I would hope your local range could to. 0 -

I took my gal to the range the other day and she shot my Ruger .22 auto (22/45) and I couldn't keep the clips loaded fast enough for her. .22's are just plain fun to shoot and if ya get one thats accurate as well ( Ruger) then it's even more fun when they can see that they are or are becoming a good shot. That Ruger with the 5 1/2" bull barrel balances real nice.[;)] 0 -
I've introduced many women to shooting, and I think Ruger .22 is the way to go. The 22/45 is not bad, and at $250 for a brand new no-frills stainless one, its hard to go wrong.
Smith and Wesson K-22 revolver (model 617) is also a great choice (and simpler controls), *BUT* with the 6" gun weighing in at 45 ounces (ie nearly three pounds) the problem with this K-frame is that some women just find it too heavy to hold for very long.
I've found that given the choice, women always choose the Ruger!0 -
have you ever gone shoe shopping? or even worse, have you ever let your wife buy you shoes?
odds are, she picks a pair on sale or because she thinks they would look good on you. or she heard from a friend that they were comfortable on someone elses husband, so she buys them.
now picture yourself doing the same thing with guns and try to guess whats gonna happen.
ask your wife what she wants to do with the gun(shoe). is it a walk around the house gun(shoe) or a camping hiking gun(shoe?) take your wife to the gun(shoe) shop and without looking at price tags or brand names, have her close her eyes and hold one(walk in them). when she finds the one that fits, she'll know. THEN ask how they wear and last. THEN look at the price tag. then buy it. a gun(shoe) is sold 99% of time based on fit,(i/e: weight, finger placement, comfort, recoil, etc...) not price or brand name.[;)]
THEN you will have a happy gun(shoe) owner.[;)]

Personally, if it were my wife (she won't touch guns) I would go with a revolver. For a new shooter they are safe, reliable, and easiest to understand. I would get a 4" or 6" barreled stainless. Single or double action doesn't matter. I am more of a fan of single actions but that is a personal bias. .22 is a great choice. Good luck and hope she likes whatever you pick!

[xx(] the above post is the exact point that you need to avoid. its NOT about what YOU want, its what she fits in and feels comforatble with that matters. if you get her something that you like, shes gonna feel forced to impress you and try to do something to fit in a mold that just isnt gonna happen for numerous reasons and youre gonna turn a potential new gun enthusist off to guns. dont you remember your mother telling you that the shoes she bought for you that didnt fit will fit someday but until then, just stuff paper in them for now? how did that feel? fit and function is key, now. not a year from now. remember... this is cruicial. its the person you want to like guns THE MOST. shes your wife! even bowling alleys have a rack of balls to pick from before you play. try handing your wife a 20lbr with one fnger hole and tell her to suck it up, it will make you a good bowler and see how long that bowling love affair lasts![;)]

Get the Walther P22 its is a bada$$ gun and when she gets tired of it, guess who gets to keep it. Plus there is all types of options and colors and stuff to keep her interested. Mine has the extended target barrel and its a tack driver.
I also have a Phoenix Arms HP22 and while the whole range kit cost under $175, its been a damn good gun for the money. No problems so far.

bobski is right to say that she should select a gun right for her, but given that she has no experience practical suggestions are appropriate. It would be nice if she could try some out before you spend your money.
