Wrong ammo!

9mm steyr and 9mm largo (9x21) are two different cartridges, arn't they?

  DIFFERENT YES, BUT THEY PROBABLY WILL WORK. WHEN THESE WERE FIRST IMPORTED (LATE 1950'S) THEY WERE ADVERTISED AS BEING ABLE TO SHOOT ALMOST ANY 9MM. PLEASE NOTE; I DIDN'T SAY IT WAS 'RIGHT' OR 'SAFE'.

  The Astra Model 400 will digest quite a variety of cartridges...

  It's bull. I have an early Llama stamped exactly the same. There is nothing special about the chamber in this gun; it is chambered for the 9mm Largo, which is dimensionally and basically power wise identical with the 38 ACP, NOT the 38 super. The business about different ammo.... would you shoot 380 in a 9mm Luger? It's a myth, shoot the proper dimensioned ammo!

  The reason an Astra 400 is known for digesting just about any 9mm ammo has to do with the strength of the extractor. The round is actually held in place firmly enough at the rear of the chamber by the extractor so that the firing pin causes reliable ignition.
  
  If I am not mistaken I seem to remember that 9mm Steyr has lower chamber pressures than 9mm Largo and is demensionally similar enough to not cause any problems in an Asta 400.
  
  That being said, The pistols were designed and intended to fire 9mm Largo ammunition.
