Advice on deer rifle needed!!
Hey all I am in need of some good advice. I currently own a 30-30 lever action and I am thinking of upgrading for mostly california deer hunting and some larger game. I would like advice on finding a gun that is very accurate reliable and possibly lighter weight. Anyone have any advice??? TIA![:D]

My personal favorite is my Browning A-Bolt Composite Stalker,topped w/a 3-9x50 Leupold.
Who was it that said the .270 was the best all-round cartridge?

I like the lighter, faster end of things for deer. .243, 257, 25wssm, 25-06. If you go for bigger game, the 25's are on the very bottom of that list if you get close and pick your shot.
For the "one-rifle-does-it-all" Category, the lowest on that list is a .264 Win mag, 270, all 7mm's followed by the venerable 30-06. If it's big game only, 30-06 and up depending on how big or dangerous you want to go after.
I like the Mauser '98 style actions myself but a lot of guys like the newer 60* throw bolts. Browning and Remington make autoloaders in 30-06.
In short you will need to shop around and do some checking yourself as to what you like to shoot. -Good luck.

The Savage bolts with the accu-trigger are hard to beat. Great accuracy,good price, and are in 7mm-08and up. Good hunting! 0 -

I'd go with a 30/06, beats the pants off the 308 and gets the job done, just cuz it's old doesn't mean it doesn't still get the job done. I'd buy it in a good bolt action and scope it with a Leupold 3x9x40, figure out which bolt action ya like everybody out there makes good ones and light ones, I happen to favor Winchesters and there 3 position safety, Ruger has a similar set up, Savage, Remington and bunches of others are good too.[;)] 0 -
30/06 beats the pants off .308? I shoot both and they are so simular that it isnt worth arguing about. Either would be great if you find a gun in that caliber for the right price. 0 -
you might want to look into a short magnum.(you mentioned lighter weight) i shoot a 7mm WSM. its considerably lighter than my friends rem 7mm mag. the ballistics are more or less identical. best of luck

You can not live without a 30-06. It is the best all around number one most versatile round in the world bar none.

I live in and hunt California. The four species that I like to go after are 1) deer 2) bear 3) pig and 4)cyote. .308win is a minimum for 2&3, but if as you say deer is going to be your primary prey then I'd recomend that you go for the 7mm-08 in a short action bolt rifle. Of course you can pay all kinds of prices and get mostly the same thing, a relativly compact and handy rifle. So following this thought I'd say for midrange money I doubt that you can beat the Rem model 7, for less $$ I'd go with the Howa/Weatherby Vangaurd and for more $$ the sky is the limit. The problem with hunting here is that one minute your in the thick brush & trees and the next you've got 400yd of open ground to glass and shoot over. 0
