twist rate? flight path update5-6-05
I have a 224 cal rifle with 1/10 twist rate. i got a box of factory ammo 55 grain soft point. went to the range and got a spread of 12 inches at 50 yards. tried another scope same thing. checked internet sights and thay are saying for that twist rate i should be using 65-70 grain bullits. my question will the heavier bullits stabilize and fly truer? ive checked the bases and rings. the crown did looked buggered up. so ive relapped the crown. havent shot it yet since. also i took a casting of the chamber and first 2 inches of rifling. the rifling looks like it should be hitting the bullit when chambered. all rifling is within 1/10th of an inch from the end of the brass relief of the chamber. any thoughts? anyone.

That twist should stabilize everything UP TO 65 or 70gr.
If your regular ammo still groups, but the new ammo dosn't, there's no reason to check the rifle/scope for problems. Your rifle simply dosn't like that ammo (combination of bullet design, powder burn rate, velocity).
Another thing, try the same ammo (if you have any left) at 150yd or more. Sometimes it takes a ways for the bullet to settle down (although your problem (12" at 50yd) seems to extream for that to be the answer)
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
[8D]Yo rollinblock, I've got a Weatherby 1-10 twist in .243 cal and it started spraying 70 gr bullets out to 3" groups at 100 yds. I found (after checking all other points) that there was a Copper build-up "tit" just at about 5:00 o'clock at the edge of the crown. I cleaned it polished it and got back to 1/2" groups with 70 gr HPBT and 37.9 gr's of IMR 4895 You may have a messed up crown so check it with a mag. glass after you "trued" it and that was probably your problem.[:)][:)][:p][:D] JIMBO

Heavy or light weight barrel? Is the barrel free floated? How much freebore? .218 Bee or .220 Swift? On high velocity .22's it don't take much of a buggerd up crown to throw them all over too.

Twist ain't got nothing to do with that bad of a group. First, go with what everyone else says....check the crown. Then check bases and everything else about the scope mounting. Then check parallax of scope(s). Then check another load. Then check the mounting of the rifle bedding and that you don't have a loose barrel? I guess we all assumed you had a .223 in bolt action. If you have an AR make sure headspace is all good. and check for looseness between upper and lower...etc. etc. Check everything in case I forgot something.
But good luck that sounds like something that will need in depth investigation.

Tailgunner has a point. Was shoot some .357s over snow one day with the sun behind me, could actually see the bullets flying through the air. For the first 20 feet or so, they flew every way but straight, after that they seemed to straighten up and fly right. Amazed me. They were 125gr at about 1300fps out of a 6" Colt. Can hit a soda can at 50' with that pistol. Have seen 5.56 in flight too, only see a liitle glimpse of them and only if the light is just right. Have also seen 8" arty, you can see them easy. 0 -

Try a thorough cleaning as well. Use an aggressive copper solvent and get it really clean. It Never hurts,..even if that is not the culprit. Simply sounds like an ammo problem to me.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

just an update. i finally broke down and contacted winchester. this is a coyote in 223 wssm. seems i have an early model that when getting the chamber cromed dropes escaped down the barrel. causing poor shooting. so the rifle is going back to them for a replacement. 0
