More Luger Info?????

Hi to all;
I logged on a couple of days ago, and asked a question about a Luger that I had acquired, and was directed to the Luger Forum. Those guys are pretty knowledgeable, but they never monitor their forums! So here I am again with another question!
The Luger that I have has a particular problem in that it will not cock the firing pin when it goes back into battery after firing the round in the chamber. When I cycle the toggle by hand, it cocks the hammer every time I try it.
No problems with firing the chambered round, nor with extraction, ejection, nor going back into battery. It just won't cock the hammer when it does. So when I fire the chambered round, it fires, the toggle cycles, extracts the spent round, and ejects it, chambers the next round from the magazine, but when I pull the trigger, nothing happens! I can then pull the toggle back slightly, which cocks the trigger, and it then fires. Also, if I rap the side of the chamber with my palm, it will cock, and fire! Very weird!

Any suggestions from you Luger Experts out there? I am baffled, to say the least!
And yes, I have taken it all the way apart, cleaned everything, inspected everything for wear, and all the parts look to be in great shape.

    I would highly suggest getting it to a good gunsmith. it doesnt sound safe. there could be a burr in the action and hanging up when cycling.or there is a worn out part in the action that when you tap the side it puts it back in place. GET IT TO A GUNSMITH!!!!!

    Get it to a gunsmith. Could be a very simple fix or may require replacement of the sideplate.

    THE luger trigger works thru the side plate and a number of levers if parts are changed or dinked with by someone that doesn't know how they work you can endup with an unsafe pistol. these parts need to be fitted.the reason the german army went to the p38 was the luger takes good gunsmiths and lots of hand fitting to work well you can't just interchange parts like a 1911.Colt

    Check tension in the sear spring and carefully bend it to increase pressure on the sear.
    If this doesn't do it, either the sear or striker (firing pin) engagement surfaces may have been shortened by grinding in an attempt to improve the Lugers' queer trigger pull. In this case, the altered striker and/ or sear will have to be replaced. These parts are interchangeable between guns.
    No big deal to correct the problem in any event.

    Thanks V35, for posting what seems to be a reasonable answer to my problem. This gun shoots very well, and does not seem to be dangerous at all, just a quirky hang up with the cocking mechanism. In taking it completely apart numerous times, and putting it back together, I can not find anything wrong with it. Every part looks fine, and fits like a glove.
    I think your suggestion about the sear and spring is a good place too start. Whenever I cycle the toggle by hand, the sear engages, cocks the firing pin, and the gun shoots. So, that is telling me that not too much can be wrong with this gun.
    I did take apart the little plunger, that fits into the end of the sear, that the trigger lever pushes against to fire the gun, and when it came out after removing the retainer pin, a little piece of the plunger had broken off of the back part, and fell out on the bench. I can't imagine how that would impact the cocking of the sear, but then again it might. and when I say it is a little part, I mean minuscule! I had to put it on a piece of tape to keep from loosing it.
    I will try your suggestion with the sear spring, and see if that helps. If it doesn't, then I think the way to go is replacement of the sear, and components, and go from there.
