270 Wby Mag Conversion update...
The best gunsmith within 100 miles voted against rechambering or rebarreling my FN action "JC Higgins" 270 Win to 270 weatherby. Problems with the receiver rails and smooth chambering that he did not want to mess with. Soooo...I've been looking on line for a 270 Wby and they are pretty expensive for my wallet. I have found a 300 Wby mag available locally for about $400 in a Weatherby Vanguard Sporter with nice wood stock (not Wally World). Looks like a Mk V sporter! Any comments on shootablility, etc. of the 300 Wby compared to 270 Wby are appreciated.

I hate to even say it but you could probabley get a .257 WBY Vangaurd from WallyWorld and have it rebarrelled or rechambered. 0 -

you can get the new vanguard Sub MOA's that look like the ultra lightweights without the fluted barrels. they have the nice synthetic stock on them. the 257 weatherby, i have a mark V, is a nice cartridge and they also make it in the 300 weatherby. it will give you good long range performance on deer type game.

[8D] Among the great firearm afficianatos on this BOARD, the only, and I say ONLY reason for Weatherby , has to be,old time trust and the fact that ,If you buy one NOW (DELUX) you can sell (for some stupid reason)later for a profit -and 1" MOA out of the box accuracy, yea I know the guarantee is 1.5" but thats on the outside, if you're good, (ha) you'll get .75" no matter what caliber!!!Check it out-then BUY

I think you are chasing a fading bore choice IMHO. The 30cal's and 7mm's are far more available.
As far as a weatherby being any faster or more accurate than the 300win mag, I'll disprove that thoery in more than one way,..so nuff said.[}:)] Freebore makes for impressive chronograph readings, but paper is the final judge.[;)]
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Billnrest your gunsmith is being lazy. The 270Wbymag is fine in a standard 270win box mag. Most of the FN barrels of the period had lots of steel so contour wouldn't be a problem, I would think. If you can't find anyone else look up Harry McGowen. He can do it no problem. Just don't contract for stock work as that is 3 years minimum. Metal work he turns around in reasonable time and money, not cheap but reasonable. 0
