Winchester 70 question
Howdy from Texas! Sorry to be forever buggin' you guys! I have a Win. Model 70 in 7 Mag. It has a lightweight synthetic stock, and no ploorplate. If I want to restock this rifle, do I have to find a stock that has no opening for a floorplate, or can I have this rifle altered to have a magazine floorplate that opens from the bottom? I hate this stock, but I haven't seen a replacement that didn't have an opening in the bottom for the magazine floorplate. Any suggestions are very much appreciated, as usual. Thanks, Barry L.

Did Winchester in the late 1940's ever produce a model 70 target in 257 roberts with a marksman stock and 24" barrel? 0 -
Seems to me it would be a lot easier(and cheaper) to just trade it on one of the other calibers.

I agree with Bobby, but to answer your question, you would have to either re-bore and re-chamber your barrel, or replace it with a new barrel chambered for the larger caliber, which would have to be blued. You would likely be looking at something over $400, thus, if you traded for a 70 in .06 or .308, even if you had to throw in a $100 kicker, you would still be money ahead. I would probably stick with .270 unless you shoot a LOT. 0 -
I have a source for some factory take-off barrels that are very inexpensive, and I got a whale of a deal to start with when I purchased the rifle. The barrels are already chambered and blued, so the total cost would not be much. I just wasn't sure if anything else besides the barrel would have to be replaced as well. 0 -
it would seem there would be a little trouble going to a 308 considering the 270 is a long action and the 308 is a short action. you can kill the same type of game with the 270 as the 30-06 so i would leave it alone

There is often a reason that a barrel is taken off and is selling cheap. If I wanted to change calibers on this rifle I'd go with the 30-06, as it is the same basic shape and size as the 270 and I'd send it to someone like Harry McGowen or ER Shaws and have a basic after market barrel put on. Still as has been said before, there is very little I'd hunt with the 30-06 that I wouldn't hunt with the 270win. Check out the prices on "Cheaper then Dirt" or "Natchez", they may be able to get you 270win ammo at a cost that will convince you to keep it as is. Not to mention that keeping it as is makes a good excuse to buy another rifle sometime in the future..... 0 -

This isn't something that's typically done at home. I'm pretty sure you need to have a qualified gunsmith put the barrel on so they can headspace the chamber for the new cartridge. The 270 is a great cartridge and the cost would hardly justify the results. It's not quite as versatile as the 3006 but has been called the riflemans rifle and is pretty capable of handling any species in north america.

.270 is a great cartridge. I would not do it. Recheck the .270 ballistics and see how great they are. It seems to me that the .270 is available even in the smallest local shop.
