Tikka T3 Lite 270 WSM or 300 WSM?
I am a woman of medium build from Alaska interested in purchasing either a Tikka T3 Lite 270 WSM or 300 WSM. I would like the rifle for hunting caribou, moose, goat, sheep, and possibly bear. I have come across both brown and black bear while hunting other animals and would like to be able to take a bear with this rifle should the opportunity present itself. My concern is recoil. I have comfortably shot a Winchester Model 88 .308 for years but want to switch to a stainless steel synthetic stock rifle that is custom fit to me. In looking at the recoil table I see that the 270 WSM (150 grain) has the recoil energy of 18.9 ft. lbs. and the 300 WSM (180 grain) registers at 23.8 ft. lbs. How big a difference is that? I do not want to buy a rifle that affects my accuracy because of recoil. I have also considered the Winchester Model 70 in 270 WSM or 300 WSM. Do you have any recommendations?

the 270 wsm should do everything but the bear, they don't really suggest using anything under 375 for alaskan brown bear. 270 wsm should be fine for black bear though. maybe look for a 338-06, but it would be expensive.

I shoot a Browning A-bolt 300WSM, its a good choice. The 300WSM would more then likly be your best option, because you can have a heavier lead for the large game animal that you seek. Personally I dont find the recoil to be a real big issue. I'm sure that you could have a nice recoil pad placed on it that would really help absorb the recoil. You may want to check and make sure that Tikka has worked out the barrel issues with their flutted barrels(you can search the general forum for topics that have the story and pictures... its scary!!). There have been cases of the barrel's exploding. But I really do like my Browning A-bolt so you may want to look at one. Mine is extremly accurate and I'd recommend it to anyone.

The Tikka T3 Light Synthetic bucks real bad in just .308 heavy loads I had to put a limbsaver recoil pad on mine to shoot anything over 150gr I would not want to shoot one in 300wm without a limbsaver recoil pad and even then it may hurt.
It is however the most accurate gun I have ever owned and nicest bolt action I have ever seen, I plan to buy more Tikka's in the future.0 -
I would say go with the 300wsm or 300wm the diff in recoil to the 270wsm is not that noticeable. Limbsaver now makes their great recoil pad for the t-3, put one of those on and you'll be fine. Yes a light gun will recoil more but it is a dream to carry all day. I have bought 3 t-3's in the last two years and am very happy with them. 0 -

I have a Tikka Whitetail Hunter in .30-06. Most accurate rifle I have ever fired. The recoil pad looks and feels more like a set of golashes. I plan to get that changed to tame the recoil. Obviously you want more than the .30-06 for your purposes. I am a public high school teacher who spends as much time in the woods as possible. I'd rather be outdoors every day off my life than anywhere else and the colder the better. You can't imagine how jealous I am of you. I will be day dreaming about your post all day. The Sims Limbsaver model T-10112 will fit your Tikka T3 lite. I am on my way to pick one up today (T3 270WSM). If you want the bigger 300 WSM you may want to go with a muzzle brake. David Gentry in Montana makes a "Quiet Muzzle brake" that increases the noise to the shooter by only 2 decibles. Still wrecks havoc on everyone else though. His number is 406-388-GUNS(4867). I had him do one for me and he is great to deal with.

if you want to hunt all that game check out the new 325wsm. the recoil is simular to the 300wsm with more energy down range.. 0 -
I own the t3 lite in .300wsm...for me recoil is comparable to a 30-06 but then again I'm 6ft 200lbs. Most accurate rifle I have ever shot. If your seriously concerned about large bear I'd go with the .300 and either add a muzzlebrake or better recoil pad. I wouldn't worry about the .325wsm....you only get about 75fps on same weight bullets. Just my .02
