burris
I'm buying a new scope for my long range hunting rifle. I was looking at a Leupold variX III long range in 4.5-14x50, but my local dealer suggested that i look at the burris signature select series. The 6-24x44 seems like a great scope. Any comments on burris optics, more specifically the signature select series? Thanks

Their Warrenty is one word: Forever. I prefer Burris over Leupold, though I am not crazy about the European styling. I agree with your dealer. Now, go look at www.bearbasin.com for price comparison. Also look at www.natchezz.com 0 -
Nothing but Burris all the way............the signature series is the best of them all unless you have enough saved to go the Nightforce route.

glad to hear the support burris has, great reausurrance![:D] I'm planning a deer hunt in Mcintosh county north dakota. but i also would like to be able to use this rifle here in WI.
but is 6-24 too much magnification? i have ordered a taurus raging bull in 480 ruger(wich hopefully can handle everything within 75 yards).Is this a practical idea, or should i just go with less magnification? thanks for the feedback0 -
6-24 power is a little extreme for a hunting rifle. Much more power than you really need.

If you buy the 6X24 just always get used to the idea of leaving it on 6X unless you need more. That extra power is handy from time to time, and the price on a 4X16 is almost the same.
A friend has a 6X24 Black Diamond on a 7mm BR XP-100, that he uses for groundhogs, it looks a little weird but it sure shoots where it's pointed.

I tend toward lower magnification and frequently hunt with 1.75-6. For future resale and for flexibility, however it is hard to beat the 3x-9x scopes. Hunt at 4x, and use the 9x at the range to sight in and see where the holes are. Keep the objective small - 40-44mm. Stay away from 50mm and larger objectives, they force you to raise the scope to high for a good cheek weld on the butt stock, making consistency hard to acheive in bullet placement. 0 -

Usually the 6-24 scopes are more bulky than the lower powered ones. Also as magnification goes up brightness goes down. I just took a 6-24 off my prairie dog rifle and went to 3-9 but normally leave it on 6x.

Best scope for the money hands down. The 6-24 is a great magnification range if you are TRULY hunting long Range. Now keep in mind,..long Range STARTS at 400-500yds,..anything less is SHORT range. If you are seriously persuing a LR hunting rifle,..then 24X will be a welcome addition for those 600-1000yd shots. The 4-16x44 serves me well out to 400-500yds on deer sized game.
Now,..there IS NO SUBSTITUTE for magnification when you are doing a load workup. The bigger the target, the more precisely you can center the crosshairs. LR loads are typically tested at no less than 200yds and most often begin testing at 300yds and then on out. True LR rifles need true LR scopes. Now keep in mind if you are "Clicking" to the target,..the signature 6-24x scopes have something like only 25MOA of total adjustment,..unlike the leupold with 38MOA and the Nightforce with 100MOA or the IOR Valdada 6-24 tactical with 65MOA. A 10 or 20MOA base can help with that,..but adjustment range is still limited. That is my only complaint with Burris signatures. The reason they offer such a bright picture is they use larger internal lenses than the competition, therefore that larger erector tube makes less room for adjustment inside the main tube. You have to give up some adjustment range, to get a picture that bright and clear in a 1" tube. No big deal unless you are looking at 1000yd target shooting.
Burris signatures are excellent scopes. I have 3.

Regarding Burris scopes. I had one "fog up" while on a hunt in Colorado.
I sent it back to the factory and they made a repair and returned the scope to me at no charge.
I know they make great scopes but I just can't forget the one that did not perform.
I may buy another one...someday.0
