Info about Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifle
I recently acquired a Mannlicher-Schoenauer sporting rifle, a "bring-back" from WWII. The caliber appears to be 9.5x57. It has a half stock and double-set triggers. It is in very good condition with an excellent bore, except: someone added (a long time ago) a Pachmayr rubber recoil pad, and there are some sanding marks on stock in area of pad. The pad is also hardened and decaying. Also, the small screw used to adjust the let-off for the set trigger is missing. Otherwise a few bumps and bruises of normal careful hunting use over the time. I think it may have been re-blued at some time, but I can't decide for sure. It just seems too good to be as old as it must be. Wood finish is good except as noted in recoil pad installation area. Mechanical condition and functioning are excellent. It has the usual open iron sights with flip-up 300 yard (meter) blade on back and silver-bead front. No front sight hood was ever used. Only safety is on bolt. Is it a Model 1910? There are scope sight bases attached, which appear to be the European style I have heard referred to as "claw mounts". The rear attaches with two screws; I can't determine the front attachment method yet. I have many photos if someone could help me identify and get an estimate of value (I don't intend to sell it). With-out a hands-on from a knowledgeable collector/dealer it would be difficult to assess the vintage of your Mannlicher or how close to factory original, it is. Per your post, the pad, reblue, sight bases etc., could have a quite a negative effect on value, depending on quality of work.
The folks who are serious collectors of Mannlichers would want it as close to factory original as possible. The caliber could also be a drawback, if it works out your rifle isn't collector quality. 9.5 x 57mm isn't stuff you can obtain easily or economically, if somebody were to buy it for hunting.

If in fact it is a 9.5 (.375 cal), then it is a 1910 model. There are 2 styles of claw mounts made for Mannlichers. Both of them have the front mount dovetailed into the front ring, thus obscuring the model designation. The rear mount on one is simply a screw on the left side of the receiver. The other has a very narrow mount on the left side of the receiver. If you can't figure out how to post them here, email me some photos at: joel_black@netzero.net 0
