Nice round. It's a 7MM .284 I think Winchester is the only factory ammo made, 150 gr . Will handle any whitetail. A pretty flat shooter out to 300yds.

I don't think you will find the ammo at the corner store, unless it has a lot of dust on it. It's easy enough to get if you don't mind mail order, or ordering a large amount thru your dealer.

Reloading is best for a bolt action. Stick with factory OAL for autos and levers.

I shoot the 284 factory 150s out of a winchester model 100, no complaints.

It's about the same as a Rem .280 and below the 7mm mag (all have .284 bullets).. Don't know about the availability of ammo but I think you would be reloading alot - I do for both my .280s. Good flat shooters and great for Deer!!!

I have a Winchester mod 100 rifle that the previous owner cut to carbine length(19") .It spoiled the collector value but it shoots like a dream,I reload for it.The brass has a rebated rim (smaller dia.then the body).Gun only holds 4 rounds instead of 5. [^]

My fatherinlaw has one, I sight in for him every hunting season. It shoots 1" groups year after year. His is a herters he got back in the 60's and some day I will talk him out of it, some day. Nice gun, with well placed shots it drops them in their tracks. His has a Leupold 2x7 that doesn't have quite enough eye relief and has caught me a couple times. The rifle doesn't seem to kick bad but I had a nice scope eye going to wyoming one yr. Funny how guys in the know seem to recognize exactly how you got that odd little cut by the eye. Good luck with yours.

I've got one in Ruger M77 with a flat bolt and a Leupold 2x7 scope very nice gun. My dad bought it when it was new and we really loaded up on factory ammo for it so I've got lots of brass, I've been loading for it for years just about everyone in the family has taken deer with it and my son in a year or so will be on elk with it. The .284 is the same as a 280 as far as performance just in a shorter package. Outperforms the 7x57 and 7mm-08 but not on par with the 7 mag, a fine round nonetheless. It is capable of taking deer and antelope as far as you are capable of responsible shooting.

    Springer,

You never mentioned what rifle you found this in. Not that it would make any difference except how fast you get back to where you found it and buy it. Most rifles built for it are pretty good. Just that the the Winchester 88 and 100 have good collector value. The model 88 is the lever action version( or vice versa) of the semi-auto 100. I don't know how many rifles were built in Model 88 though. More were built in the 100. The Model 70 is a great solid action too if it is that.
One other note if it matters is that this is the case that a lot of 1000 yd shooters have based their shooting on in 6.5-284. I have it on good authority that the 7mm is just as accurate as the 6.5 (past national champion). -Good luck, I think you'll like the round.

I wouldnt go into the deer woods with out my XP 284 and a few 140 gr ballistic tips in my pocket, and anything inside of 300 yards is going into my freezer, except groundhogs in the summer that is.
The barrel is only 16" long but it will outshoot my 24" 280 all day long.
If you buy it and need factory ammo let me know as I have a bunch of factory 125's and 150's that I don't use anymore.

My apologies to MrBruce. I liked the photo so much I forgot to read his response! Try him first as he sounds like a good source of Ammo, if you get one. PS I always liked the 284 as well.
