Non-resident firearm purchasing...
Here's a dumb question... I know buying a long-gun out-of-state is no big deal. Can you buy a handgun out-of-state, or do they have to be shipped to a local FFL? If you are wondering...I work for the airlines and it would be cheaper just to fly out to the gunshop...

Don't know if it matters, but I am from North Dakota, a state with instant background checks and no waiting period.

You as a "NON" FFL Licensee, can't legally purchase a handgun made after 1898 in another state without going through a FFL. Even if you were to fly to another state the handgun would have to be transfered to you through a FFL in your state of residence.

I thought all firearms had to be bought in your state of residence?
Can anyone buy a long gun anywhere or does that vary from state-to-state? I always operated under the notion that guns, long guns or handguns, had to be purchased through an FFL in your state of residence or as a person-to-person.0 -
It is legal for you to buy a long gun from an FFL in another state IF you appear before him at his place of business, & IF such a transfer is legal in both states.
Of course, some dealers may not be interested in figuring out the law in your state (if, say, you live in CA), so some dealers may just refuse to get involved in such transactions.

Many states, like here in Kansas, can only sell long guns to residents of neighboring states unless you go through a transfer dealer.

To purchase a pistol in person, you must buy it within your state. You can buy one out of state, but you must ship it through an FFL. Of course, you are subject to your home local laws while doing this.
To purchase a long gun, you can do this and transport it as you see fit, in accordance with your home local laws.
I spent four years on the road and I bought my first long rifle in Colorado while being a Florida resident. They did a background check and I was able to walk out the door with it. You can transport it through interstate travel if you can prove where your final destination is. This is to protect you from the states that have strict gun control legislation. Since you're flying you can transport on the plane, I would think without a problem(checked baggage of course). Also, depending on the state you purchase in, And again pertaining to home local laws(I know NYC makes you register every firearm regardless of allocation.)if you buy it privately, it may be not matter.

Here in MN. You CANNOT buy a pistol if you are out of state here in MN. You need to get a pistol purchase permit here in MN to buy for resident. However, that does not mean with some further checking you may be able to get a non-resident permit. It is less of a big deal though to have it shipped to an FFL in your state, because I know a lot of people who do that.
I too work for the airlines and it hasn't been much of a benefit as far as getting firearms that I purchased from one place to another.

The above only holds true if you are buying from an FFL dealer. If you are buying from a private sale you DO NOT have to go through an FFL here in MN. You would need to purchase a lockable firearm container and have the weapon checked at the terminal of departure, and provide ID where you pick it up back in North Dakota. -Good luck

sandwarrior, you cannot buy any gun from a non-licensee in another state. You may only buy a gun from an FFL in any state, or from a non-licensee within your state (state & local law permitting).

[8D]I've purchased most of my Weatherby's from out of stste (Vermont,Texas, Kentucky, Conneticut,etc) and here in Calif., I just buy and ship from FFL to my FFL no problemo[:)][:)][:p][:D]
