need pistol help, suggestions, advice
looking to purhcase a handgun for hunting, used for the upclose 'kill shot'. any suggestions on make, model, caliber and a reasonable price for what you recommend would be greatly appreciated. thanks
i may also use it recreationally.....maybe some target shooting for fun...shooting at other small varmits

explain up close? do you mean after you shot it with a rifle to finish it off or a trapping kill?

how about a plane old surplus fixed sight police revolver like a s&w m10 4" in .38cal? usually under 200.00.
no sense getting fancy. youll have blood all over your hands from skinning, bouncing it around in your pack, rubbing up against rocks climbing cliffs, etc...maybe even an old taurus 38 cal.

Up close and personal any caliber will work. A .22 behind the ear will take out almost anything you encounter. A lot of local trappers use a Ruger .22 auto. I finished off a deer a few years ago with a .44 behind ear and it was not pretty[xx(]

problem with the 22 is some states such as Virginia require the bullet to be .23 or larger to hunt big game with and when checking it in could cause some problems, if they see it. Or if it is mountable you could get into some trouble with the taxidermist if they find a 22 caliber hole in its head. it seems like a real tip off that it was shot from a car or under a spotlight. I would look at a 9mm ruger p95 or a 32 saturday night special. the service revolver also sounds like a good idea. you can get both of them pretty cheap used. i carried a beretta 9000s 9mm for such jobs, but i haven't used it.

Minnesota requires minimum calibers. Check your hunting regs. book. You will definately do some time.... and I don't mean in the woods, either. .357 works out to be the minimum handgun caliber. It is by bore diameter and case length. .44 special also will NOT work. The only exception is the 10mm (not .40 S&W),again by legal description. So it comes out to:
.357 mag, 10mm, .44 mag, .41 mag .45 long colt and all the other "giant killers, ie .50's ,super .44 and .45 calibers. Remember, the law states that no other high power rifle or hand gun is to be outdoors unless you have a license for specific game, your tag must be unfilled or party hunting, other than .22 rimfire rifle(maybe pistol). Killing a big game animal with other than slug, muzzle loader or accepted handgun or having same in possession in the field during that season is a severe offense. The only exception is a person with a CCW and that weapon can not be used to take big game unless it is of appropriate caliber0 -
I carry my S&W model 1006 (10mm) at all times when hunting. It is more than adequate for a finishing shot (althoguh I have never needed one). With the handloads I carry, it is also capable of taking a deer at close range (< 50 yards). 10mm is pretty much the most versatile auto pistol cartirdge extant.
That said, when you are talking point blank range, most any pistol will do. A .22 LR in the head at 3 feet is pretty effective.

Alle hit it on the head. If caught with a .22 pistol in MN while hunting deer, you will be fined and possibly lose your pistol.
