disposal of ammo
I have about thirty rounds of ammo to get rid of. It's all .40 hollowpoints. I don't feel comfortable shooting it up due to its age and am not sure where to get rid of it. A gun shop maybe?

I have a bunch of 5.56 military blanks plus some 60 odd 30-06 rounds I have no use for. Anyone know a safe way to dispose of them other than lighting a big bonfire and watch the fireworks.
Seriously though good suggestion welcome and even bad ones..I could use a laugh since I was supposed to be on my way to Florida today.
BTW, live in Northern Virginia so anyone local over 21 welcome to them.

Hello I don't want to tell you what to do but if this ammo has been stored inside out of extrem tempatures the 40 has not been in production long enough to go bad . stored correctly it should be good for over 25 years if you don't want to use in your carry gun use it to pratice. 0 -
If it is .40 S&W I have to ask "How old is it"? That particular cartridge has only been on the market for about 15 years and if stored properly then 15 birthdays are not even close to the half life of ammunition...we have guys shooting 50 year old ammo with few if any problems. If you are still afraid to shoot the ammo drop it off at your PD or sheriffs department and they will dispose of it properly.

Post civil war BP rounds still function well, and smokeless rounds from WW2 still work well (some of the WW1 surplus may not go "bang" every time due to storage conditions), and your worried about fairly new ammo doing what? If it's factory shoot it, if it's someone elses reloads pull the bullets and dump the powder on the lawn (great fertelizer BTW) keep the bullets and brass for reloading. 
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

sf2, shoot it. At the very worst, there may be a slight drop off in velocity. If you stored it in an uninsulated attic for a few years so it literally roasted 24/7 then literally froze 24/7, maybe - but usually the change in performance is most notable at the extreme temperatures and after considerable exposure thereto. I'd shoot it in NY nanosecond w/o a qualm.

the ammo should be good. i just shot up some 20 year old reloadsin my 222.

If you just "want to get rid of it" offer it to the local police department. They are usually more than happy to take ammo from the general public. I told that to a lady that was closing out an estate of a friend of mine in FL. I couldn't easily take it by air to IN with the firearms plus it wasn't anything special. She was happy to have a safe place to get rid of it.
