WHICH IS MORE ACCURATE: 45ACP OR 40 CAL?

Which of these calibers is inherently more accurate? Has anyone seen published articles which have compared both?

    Hello there has been more work done by gunsmiths and shooters on both the 1911 and ammo for the 45 then has been done on the "slow & weak" pun intended 40 . with the same amount of R&D the 40 could be a fine cartridge but for now you can buy a match 45 but I don't think any or many 40 cal match guns are being built."PRAISE THE HARD-BALL GUN"

    I shoot both of those cals. and it depends on the type of load. Remember, if you are shooting competition the 45 cal makes a bigger hole. so if both cals. struck the same place on the target, the 45 may break the next scoreing ring where the 40 wouldn't. Something to think about.

    If you want capcity, Then the 40 S&W is the way to go.

    While Targetshooter is essentially correct, the mag capacity difference between the two is, IMHO, minimal; usually, 1-2 rounds(USP .40 13, USP .45 12; Glock 22 (.40) 15, Glock 21 (.45) 13).

    If you're looking at a hi-cap pistol, shoot 'em both; I lean towards .45, but, I have big hands, and can handle the fat grips that a double-stack .45 requires; but not everybody cares for it.

    As for accuracy, I agree with the earlier poster: it's the shooter, not the round.

    That is only true to a point. As you increase velocity, there will come a point where accuracy plummets. Of course, that is considering all other things being equal.

    OK, maybe I wasn't clear. Forget capacity, the shooter, etc. Is there BALLISTIC DATA that suggests that one of these calibers is INHERENTLY more accurate than the other?

    Its not possible to generalize since that's going to be purely load and gun dependent.

    Historicly speaking the 45acp has more time down range in compitition than any other calibur in the USA. That being said it is the combination of shooter, gun and load. My 2 cents [8D]

    Years ago gun writers used to claim that one cartridge was more accurate then another, this was standard fodder in the gun mags. This isn't talked up as much these days. There are various reasons for this, including that modern production standards are much better then they used to be, say 25 years ago. Bullets, powders and primers are very consistant now, where back then they were less so. So if you are asking if a 200g, 45cal bullet traveling at 1000fps is going to be more accurate then a 180g 40cal at the same speed, then the answer is probably no. In that these have similar cross sectional densities and all else being even they should behave very much the same. Yes there is more drag on the 45, but then again there is more energy to over come the drag. The real trick to accuracy is, as has been said before, how you get the bullet into the air.
