I assume you have brushed it with bronze bush? If so you might try a stainless steel brush very carefully.

There is a product on the market called "Blue Wonder". It stops the oxidation process at a chemical level and goes to work removing the rust. It is amazingly effective. You can pick it up at gun shows, and their web site. It does wonders with "normally dirty" bores actually putting a mirror shine in the bore(no abrasive materials). And it does work well with surface rust. If the first application doesnt do a good job carefully scrub with a stainless steel brush that has been heated with a butane lighter. The cleaner is not flammable however it does smell bad. The heat makes the chemicals more effective. After the heavy rust is gone use some M-Pro7 on the surface to clean and protect the surface, then use standard protectant such as Break-Free CLP. hope this helps. btw the site is www.bluewonder.com i believe.

    It's a .22. Just reline the barrel.

i took some blue and rust remover to it, so now i get to reblue the gun (i was interested in doing this, so i wasn't horribly upset when the blue remover cut through the blue like a bulldozer). it also loosened the stuff up in the barrel very well and i can now fit the cotton swab in it to clean it out real well. i am going to put another coating of the rust remover in the barrel and it should be back to shootable condition. i now have the problem that the gun looks better without the blue and i want to keep it just the metal. i know it will rust really easily so is there anything i can do so i can leave it like it is and still protect it from rust?

It's all basic chemistry. Steel contains mostly iron; when it is exposed to moisture, the iron combines with the oxygen in the moisture to form ferric oxide (rust). When rust has formed, steel has been lost; pitting is found where a LOT of steel has been lost. The chemical process can be stopped, it just can't be reversed. There is no "cure".

For a valuable rifle, or for a gunsmith who can do his own work, relining or replacing a barrel is an option. In your case, it's not worth worrying about; throw the gun away, or strip it & sell the usable parts.

refuse to throw the gun away. i have got it back into shooting shape. the blue and rust remover destroyed the rust inside the barrel. i just want to keep the metal color and am looking for some kind of way to do that. the other option is getting some of that do it yourself blueing.

If it won't shoot well after cleaning it up, convert it to a .22 smoothbore.

i think it should shoot fine. the rifling looks like it is in very good shape. not a bad suggestion if it doesn't though

For what your looking to do you can buy some reblueing solutions at your gun shop or Dick's. Birchwood Casey makes a few and there a lot of other on the market. Preparation is everything!!! It's a fun project, the first time ...

I am assuming your barrel is now 'in the white'. Bare, chromed-looking gunmetal?

If you like this, I've heard of persons waxing the metal surfaces with any good automotive paste wax. It is pretty durable for normal handling.

After heavy handling or taking the rifle afield. You would need to re-apply the wax.

Otherwise, wipe it down good with 'RIG' grease. Rust Inhibiting Grease. Available from Natchez Shooter's Supply, Brownells, or well-stocked gun shops
