Is the boom worth the buck?
I'm interested in buying a long range rifle in the 300 RUM caliber. i'm a remington man, so i'm thinking about the PSS or the Sendero SF. i've heard alot of good things about this cartridge, but is it really that much better than the 300 win?

The 300RUM has some minimal % more case capacity then the 300 Weatherby, which has some on the 300 Winchester. Exactly where along here overbore is reached is a topic for hot debate, so I'm not going to try to pin it down. There seems to be a practical limit as to how fast this technology can push a bullet, so magnums are better at pushing larger bullets to those limits. Meaning that a 30-06 gets a 180g up around 2700/2800fps, the 300Win about 3000fps, the Weatherby a solid 3150fps and the RUM around 3300? Both the Weatherby and the RUM are probably better served with a 200g bullet moving a little slower. So the question is what are you hunting that needs a 200g bullet, moving that fast, that as a practical hunter you are still willing to take the shot at that range? The answer is generally African plains game and not much else. So I see the RUM as an answer looking for a problem...... 0 -

If you have a Sendara ,270 you already have an excellant long range gun for deer sized game such as antelpoe, mule deer, whitetail, and caribou. Have you tried longer range shooting with the Sendaro yet? 0 -
I am extreamly happy with my PSS in 300 RUM. I'm getting 6" groups at 700 yards. looking through a http://www.leupold.com/products/tactical_products/Mark_4_8_5-25x50mm_LRT_M1.htm held in Badger rings http://www.badgerordnance.com/htm/prod_a.php and mounted on badger rails with a 20 moa forward cant http://www.badgerordnance.com/htm/prod_b.php. There are not many makers of brass for this cartridge yet so for now your limited to Remington brass.

If long range target shooting is your mission, I would suggest the .338 RUM. Reason being available bullets-the .338 class have better S.D. and B.C. The .338 RUM is the ballistic twin of the .338 Lapua Mag, which has been winning 1000 yard matches for a long time. The .300 RUM is a darn good round, but it is borderline overbore and, as ern98 said, is better suited to bullets of over 200 grains. Even at that, it has trouble making use of the available case capacity. I have a .375 RUM, which is probably the best balanced of the RUM family but .375 caliber has never been a match shooting favorite. I would definitely say .338. Be sure to add some lbs. to the gun, too, unless you like pain. I can tolerate about 15 rounds on the bench with my .375, after that my concentration starts to slip. Of course, mine is a relative featherweight at 8.6 lbs. I would imagine .338 RUM would be quite tolerable in a 14-16 lb rifle.

The 300RUM (My 1000yd Light Gun) is a great target round. I had good success with the 200gr SMK,..but the 216gr Clinch River over 90gr of Retumbo is SUPERB (.189" at 100yds @ 3208fps from a 30" PacNor). The 338 pills to be of the same BC must approach the 300gr range, nothing less than the 250gr SMK, but the 300gr is far superior.
I have worked with the 7mm, 300, and 338RUM and all of these 404jeffreys based calibers have been uncanny accurate. They just have a volume/body/shoulder etc design that makes for great shooters.
The RUM WAS NOT EVER needed to push 180gr pills,..it is based on a theory of shoving the higher BC, heavier pills at equivalent speeds. One must take each caliber in context,..comparing a 300win to a 300RUM is like comparing a C5 Vette to a Z06 Vette. I never understood the guys who want to push little bullets out of magnum cases,..it defeats all the engineering that went into the magnum and goes against it's intended purpose,..heavy bullets going fast.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
