Info on German Mauser K-98
I have been looking at this gun for a while now and I found them for $150 at http://www.southernohiogun.com/index.html. Could someone give me some more history on this gun and if there going to be worth anything down the road. Thanks everyone

The k-98 is a shorteer version of the Gewehr 98 German military rifle used in WW1. This version featured improved sights, shorter barrel and stock, and a turned down bolt instead of straight. This model was adopted in 1935 and was used by Germany until the end of ww2 in 1945. Values on the guns you are looking at are currently low because they were captured by the soviets from 1941-1945. The soviets rearsenaled them which included depending on the rifles condition: Rebluing, Restocking, Rebarreling, or smaller repairs including additions of replacement parts. Very few if any are completely numbers mathcing and all had the wood refinished with a coat of varnish instead of the original linseed oil treatment. The Czechs and Yugoslavians did this to some German rifles as well. The ones with all the codes and nazi eagles intact will eventually raise the highest in value, and the earlier the date on the rifle the better usually. SOme codes and dates are more rare do to the manufacturer and or year. An original, non capture K98 in the same condition will always be worth more because it has not been messed with. These rifles that are captured and have the markings defaced are really just great shooters, wall hangers, or rifles for reenactors. If you are a Mauser collector and have a nice all original one which you no doubt paid dearly for you can buy one of these and shoot till your heart is content. 0 -
The 98 k's being imported and sold inexpensively nowadays, are coming in from the ex eastblock countries.
Nothing wrong with them, BUT they have little collectors value as most have been reworked in the past. The numbers on the various parts have been forced matched, also in many cases they have been refinished.
Perhaps sometime in the future their value will increase? but now your getting what you pay for. Most 98 k collectors "NOW" have little interest in them.
