German Luger 9MM Luger????

Hi to all, been away for a while, and as such haven't kept up with the forum, but I'm back, with a new (new to me!) Gun in the arsenal!
I picked up a really clean Germen Luger, that I really like to shoot, and it has been great. But for whatever reason, it has developed a problem with the loading of the next cartridge into battery. The slide does not close all the way, after ejecting the spent round, and it has me baffled!
It does not do it all the time, but regularly enough to drive me nuts. I have cleaned the entire gun very well, and oiled and greased everything as it should be, but to no avail. So I thought you "Experts" might know a hidden secret that address' this particular problem.

    Hello you have checked the most common cause for this problem second most common cause is the Magazine .do you have another magazine? THIRD CAUSE COULD BE RECOIL SPRINGS OR ONE OF THE HOOKS on the top half broken that engage the spring.

    I second what he previous poster told you. You also might try changing your brand of ammo. Lot of the U.S. commerical ammo is loaded to minimum specs for various reasons, they tend to have marginal reliability in the Luger.

    I've been favorably impressed with the CCI Blazer, ( FMJ ) in 45 ACP. If they load it the same way for the 9mm P, it should work great in Lugers.

    I have 2 P08 lugers and they do not like CCI 9mm Blazers, they jam frequently with that ammo. They do work fine with brass cased FMJ ammo.

    Since Lugers are military weapons they were made to use FMJ ammo. If your ammo is a hollow point or softpoint this can contribute to cycling problems.

    Using full power ammo should help cycling. I know that Ruger recommends not using CCI Blazer .44mag in my Deerfield carbine since it is slightly under powered compared to the brass cased ammo. I tried it and sure enough it does not cycle my Deerfield.

    Thanks guys;

    just a follow up to my question; I am using FMJ brass cased Winchester 124grn. Ammo in it right now. When I took it apart, and cleaned it, I looked pretty good at the innards, and could see nothing broken or out of place, particularly the recoil spring lever hooks.
    One other question; is it normal for the Luger lever to hang just short of going into battery, when cycling it without the magazine in? I imagine it is, but am not sure.
    Perry Shooter; what is the most common cause of hanging, and what is the problem with the magazine that causes this problem? I only have one magazine, and it looks to be in very good shape. No dings, dents, or binding springs inside.
    One of the things I am going to try, is a little polishing of the feed ramp, and the throat that the magazine slides in. They seem a little constricted, and I'm thinking this might help, at least make the magazine easier to seat, and eject.

    Thanks again for the info. Please give me any more advice you can come up with, and in the mean time, I will pick up some +P ammo for it, and give that a try.

    BigBarn: IMO, you are risking damage to your Luger if you use +P ammo in it. The Winchester 9mm you are using works fine in all of my 15 Lugers. I would suspect the recoil spring needs to be replaced. For better info, try asking your question at the Luger Forum; those folks specialize in Lugers and can help you solve your problem.

    [I use Winchester in mine without a hitch. Mine seems to shoot a little right and high. Those are tricky sights to get used to. /i]
