94 Win WW2 mfr????

Two things about this are interesting to me and I have tried to research on-line with no success. Maybe a specialist in the M94 can answer. First the SN is 1339XXX. It has the pre-war rounded crosshatched hammer and the last style tang markings but is NOT drilled and tapped for a tang-mounted site! Is this a factory omission or wartime trasitional variation? Second, the reciever has a stamp (left side) that looks like a surveyors symbol. The stock and forend show traces of the same symbol that someone has obviously tried to sand out and refinish. It has a military style sling swivel in the stock but nothing up front. Someone told me a long time ago that some seebees were issued M94 during the war but it has no U.S. markings. Any information (or even speculation) is appreciated.

    Hello Phil...

    You have entered the "Twilight Zone" of the Winchester Model 94 production.

    From what I know and understand, the last style uppper tang marking began at circa serial number 1,300,000 and was used until circa 2,000,000. Winchester stopped drilling & tapping the upper tang for tang mounted sights circa serial number 1,100,000.

    As for the stamp on the left side of the receiver, I really need to see a picture of it before I stick my neck out and try to identify it. As far as I know, all of the "U.S." marked Model 1894s were issued to Border Patrol agents. I have never heard of any that were issued to regular active duty military... especially to the U.S. Navy. For what it is worth, I am A U.S. Navy retiree.

    Does that "surveyors symbol" look like an arrowhead?

    If so, you might have a WWII Canadian-issue M94. A number of these were issued to Canadian "home guard"-type units that patroled the West Coast areas of Canada during the war.

    Of course, the RCMP was also issued Model 94's, but these are usually well marked as RCMP weapons.

    U.S. Navy SeaBees were usually issued M1 Carbines and M1911A1s.
