Remington 700 questions
I am looking at buying a Remington 700 22-250 from my uncle, and I was wondering what they are worth? It's an older ADL deluxe. Also, I was wondering what types of loads I should shoot through it. I don't load my own shells so they would be off the shelf. I have some Winchester Varmint loads for it that are at 4000 fps, is this too hot to shoot a good amount of targets with at one time? Any help would be appreciated.

50 grain V-max's shoot real well from my BDL Varmint Special 22-250. i would say you should pay somewhere between 250-350 for it depending on condition. if it is pretty marked up maybe $200.

Find out the approximate age/year of mfg. Compare to similar listed on the auction site. With used rifles of a non collectable nature the value is often whatever the seller can get, $200 to $400 at a guess. Older 700s are reularly bought, on the cheap, just to get the action for a custom project. Also remember barrel making/production has come a long ways in the last twenty years. A custom barrel from back then can't compare with the better limited run barrel made today, and you are talking about a rifle with a factory barrel. Fleabay is loaded with take off barrels, brand new, where folks have bought the rifle and junked the barrel for something they think is better. If you haven't shot the rifle recently, do so. Get you Uncle to recomend his favorite load/brand so that it will shoot it's best for you. 0 -
He bought the gun new in the late 70's and he has probably shot it 20 times total. It has been in storage except for cleaning every so often. The only problem with it is two small dings on the stock when people attempted to rob his house they threw his guns in a pile. It has a weaver 6 by on it that he bought when he got the gun. The scope is a little dirty on the inside but it still is plenty clear. The gun is still sighted in perfectly after all those years, it still shoots great. 0 -
i would say near $400, maybe a little more wouldn't be a bad price to pay if it is in that good of shape with scope.

I have been buying--shooting--tradeing-selling Remington 700's for 35-40 years.In my opinion,a 700 ADL made in the 70's is a much better rifle than one made recently.Chances are it also has an excellant barrel.You may want to lighten the triggerpull and possibly free float the barrel.You will then have a rifle that will keep up with or outshoot any production rifle made today.I have also found that an older ADL will usually shoot better than a BDL.BUY IT! 0 -
I don't know much about high powered rifles. How do you lighten the trigger pull, and what exactly is free floating the barrel? I have a new 700 that is cammo synthetic and mat finished, would you do anything to this? I also have a 700 ML would you do anything to this also? 0 -
The trigger on the 700's normally come from the factory set at about 5-6 lbs. weight of pull.They can be safely set down to about 2 lbs.But only by someone who is familiar with the way the trigger operates.Do not mess with it yourself if you are not familiar.Take it to a gunsmith.Freefloating is removeing the pressure point from the stock so that the barrel is not touching.It has always improved the accuracy of any 700 that i have owned.If your rifles shoot fine the way they are,don't mess with them.If not,talk with a gunsmith. 0
