Ideas for a cheap/reliable brush gun
I'm looking for an affordable($250-450) rifle to hunt boar with down here in Texas. I want something I don't have to worry about beating up carrying it through the brush. Thus the reason for the cheap price. I was thinking cheap 30-30 or something of the sort. Open sight...no scope. Any opinions? Thanks

savage makes a range of cheap accurate rifles in stainless as well as synthetic. you should be able to find one new in this range. you could also look at maybe a used remington 7600, they make a 30-06 carbine with an 18 1/2 in. barrel. hmm there are also a host of remington 700 ADLs new and used for right in this price range. i thought people hunted boars with dogs and short swords though.

I would go with the win. model 94 30-30 I have had mind for 8 years now and never once had a problem with it. Since you would be using in brush I would use open sights. 0 -
You mentioned the 30-30. For a rifle comparable in power and also inexpensive, both to buy and to shoot, how about an SKS? Open sights, rugged, reliable, and taking a good used one in the brush won't upset you if it picks up a few "character marks" in the process.

Marlin 336's are hard to beat for the money. I personally would opt for the 35 remington over the 30-30. If you don't reload the 30-30 is much cheaper to shoot.

bperdue...the boars are on my property and don't have a season so it's neat to hunt year round between seasons. They do tear up the land but gives us something to do. Plus, they're not bad eatin'. I got tired of getting bit with the sword method, so I think i'll just shoot 'em.[:D] 0 -
Buy a Russian Model 1938 Carbine, ( the one WITHOUT the folding bayonet ). Local chains stores are selling them as cheap as $80.00.
The ammo, both Military Ball and Softpoint is readily available.
It's all you could ask for in a brush/truck gun. Throw it behind the seat and dont worry about.

Yep, you have gotten most all of the appropriate responses.
My 30-30 Marlins are 1 or 2 ding guns. I could not use them as my truck gun. The SKS's are easier for me to toss behind the seat, etc.
Someone mentioned a 7.62 x 54R, there you have more power and a cheap gun. A follow up with a bolt may not be as fast as with a lever, but you won't need one ....right(?). You did not mention a used hogleg SA pistol w/7 to 8 inch bbl. One in 44 Mag will keep up with the 30-30 and 7.62 x 39 SKS ..... Just a thought.

For $250-$400,you should be able to come up w/a Ruger .44mag carbine.
A really nice early model might go for more than that,but I know I've seen the new model in that price range.
BTW,where you from dude?Any where near Austin?
Gun show this weekend at the Crockett Center.
