Corrosive, bought a bunch of it for my M-27. Place I got it from made a point of telling me. Even printed it out on the invoice.

Almost all surplus 7.62x54 ammo is corrosive, so I treatit all as it is. Not much marder to clean, use a good soupy water then clean as normal.

Previous advice is absolutely correct. You have to be very careful with the silver tip ammo. I believe most of the silver tip ammo is corrosive but not all.

I purchased two tins (880) rounds from Sportsmans Guide about a year ago and it is non-corrosive. I called their Customer Service to verify it was non-corrosive before I purchased it. I have shot this ammo in my Mosin M-44 and I can authoritively say it is non-corrosive. I just checked and they now have silver tip ammo but it is the corrosive variety.

I believe Southern Ohio Gun has also offered the non-corrosive silver tip ammo from time to time.

Best advice has already been given - be very careful and ask the seller to verify if it corrosive and non-corrosive.

Yeah I bought a crate of it a year ago from SG but I was looking through my SOG catalog today and saw it was non corrosive in their catalog. I just wanted to verify that it is or isnt. I use ammonia wondow cleaner to neutralize the corrosive stuff in my guns. I just cant bear the thought of putting water in my gun. I had a bad rust experience or 2 with my 410 when I was a kid so I use windex and it works great. Bores are still mirrors in my Ruskie boomsticks.

Take SOG's claim of non corrosive with a grain of salt. They also advertise Turk 8MM as "non-corrosive"

The latest SOG pamphlet just came out today advertising non-corrosive 7.62x54R silver tip ammunition.

Ten cents a round for 800 rounds.

I enjoy my old british lee enfield

besides being fun to shoot and accurate I once came aross a few thousand rounds several years back from SOG i'm still enjoying to this day----yes it is corrossive

I read way back then in this very forum that if you'd get ya a nice tight-sealing container and fill it will 50% of the 'sudsy' ammonia

and 50 % water that is thr 'magic' formula to neutralize the acid (often times the only acid is in the primer)----anyway the advice given was simple to remember since it said to take one single solitary cotton swab and put in the slotted holder and run just one time thriugh (always from the breech whenever possible (of course through the breech is easy in a bolt action such as the smle.

actually run the rods through the breech end 1st

the stick the patchj through slotted end

then slowly pull through the barrel

once the the rods are clear of the action I then merely hit the bolt face a lick and a promise

after that process

I might or might not give rifle a good cleaning right away

I apply this to any and all surplus ammo.....one exception

i did purchase a brand new smle MKIII #1 that is a barrelled action only

my plans are to cannibalize (my teeth grate to think of having to make the choice) one of my two good shooters to build me a brand new .303

it will never have a mil surp round chambered in its action

I have seen what some of these are capable of at extreme distances

as far as my other rifles I wont hesitate to fire mil surp ammo whenever i can find a bargain----with the exception of the Egyptian 9mm which is a whole other matter

all i will say regarding that

do not shoot or purchase any of that untill you learn about the bullet sizes and primer characteristics 1st (unless you plan to shoot it in the proper machine gun.........."STAY SAFE"
