    Hi,

No, I have never seen one of these pistols. I know more about the cartridge than the gun.

Herter's Inc. was located in Waseca, Minn in 1961. It was a mail order gun, ammunition and loading supply house that once offered a number of quality products for the gun business.

This 401 Herter's Powermag cartridge (as it was called) was chambered in the Herter Powermag single-action revolver and its performance is almost exactly the same as the 41 Magnum. This is the only gun I have ever read about that used this cartridge.

I have two such cartridges in my ammunition collection as this cartridge is now obsolete and a collectors item. Perhaps someone else can post a photo of the revolver.

    Regards,

    Heavyiron

I was curious also about what these revolvers looked like since I have never seen one either - so I went to the General Discussions forum and "lifted" this photo. This is not my photo and thanks to the photographer!

That's a picture of my gun,I have two one I fire and the other has never been. [8D] The Accurate Arms reloading manual calls it a 10mm Magnum with a rimmed case.[^]

I bought one of these in 44 Magnum in 1967 direct from Herter's. I paid less than $50 for it. It was OK, but not nearly the quality of a Ruger Super Blackhawk. I sold it to a friend in 1970 and he still has it.

If it was as good a quality as the Ruger (which cost at least twice as much)Ruger would now be out of business. The Herter.44 mag and the .401 Power Mag were made by J.P. Sauer in West Germany and are quality handguns.[^]

    ATF,

Thank you for the photograph that does an artful job of illustrating the Herter's PowerMag revolver.

Go to gunblast.com and you'll find an article on the gun and reloading info.. I guess with proper reloading it can really scream and be quite accurate. BTW gunblast is a super site!!!
