Hello I have a friend that used to sell ammo for winchester all over the world H the headstamp is winchester I think. I will contact him very unusual mouth of the case. Do you have ammo box or gun that it fits ?. 0 -
Good photo, and it clearly shows why you can't safely shoot 22LR in a 22 Win Auto chamber.
H is Winchesters headstamp, in honor to Mr Henry.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
I found a little with Mike Wiskey's help.
I found that the .22 Winchester Automatic / .22 Winchester Auto Cartridge - was developed to ensure against wrongfull chamberings, as the .22Winchester Automatic was one of the first cartridges with smokeless powder.
They didn't want to use the .22LR platform for the new powder - so they made a new cartridge to ensure the new powder didn't end up in an old gun that wouldn't hold up to the pressure.
It was the old model-1903 that was chambered in this caliber.
It was discontinued and replaced by the model 63 in 1933.
Model 63 was discontinued in '58.
Taurus makes a model 63 today.
No I do not have the cartridge, box or weapon - I was just helping a friend find some info.

The H on .22 caliber ammo stands for B. Tyler Henry. He designed and patented guns and ammo for Winchester around 150 years ago. One of the most noted was the .22 rimfire cartridge.
