Another 1897 question
I just got the gun home and I need some instructions on take down. is there a web site with diagrams instructions? Not sure if this one is a "take down" model or not. seems to be some confusion on weather they are ALL take downs. Also can I shoot modern 2"3/4" shot/slugs in this weapon? ANy help would be appreceated as I am not at all familure with this gun (several buttons i am in the dark about (yes i figured out the shell release one)

i was thinking of having the barrel chopped down to something more reasonable than 30 in for cas. like 24 or 26 inch, do most people do that or do they just leave them 30 inch? also to install choke tubes or not? i see some barrel are longer than others and i dont think they came from factory with shorter barrels.

Ok I got the other button figured out, it's a sorta slide release. but the take down thing has got me baffeled. I can see you push the pin in at the front end of the mag tube and twist the mag and it backs out but how the barrel comes off???there is some sort of "device" right where the barrel ataches to the receiver but I pulled and pushed on it and nothing happens..Man this makes me feel dumber than dirt. 0 -
Hello flyingstar...
1. Open the action by pulling the slide handle fully to the rear.
2. With the gun in an upright position (I like it laying across my lap with the muzzle pointing to the left), use your right hand to hold the gun at the wrist, then with your left thumb, push the magazine locking pin away from the barrel (it should now be protruding outwards from the barrel pointing at 5 o'clock).
3. Put your left thumb on the magazine retaining band, and with your forefinger pull the magazine locking pin towards you in a counterclockwise direction (the pin should now be pointing towards the 7 o'clock position).
4. Grasp the slide handle with your left hand and pull all the way forwards (the slide handle will go farther forward than normal, and stop just shy of the magazine retaining band), and then twist the barrel assembly upwards (in the counterclockwise direction) 90 degrees. Now pull forward on the barrel assembly... your gun should now be in two pieces.
Reverse these steps to reassemble, and be very careful to ensure that the slide handle is all the way forward (tight to the magazine retaining band) before turning the barrel assembly back to its proper orientation.
