Fulton Armory - Good or Bad?

Thought I would ask the Experts their experience dealing with Fulton Armory before sending in a Garand to be overhauled.

Getting a new barrel, stock and parkerizing done. What has been your experience? Good, Bad, Worth It?

    They do outstanding work. Only top quality materials, & highly experienced armorers. But, expect to pay top dollar. If you want the best, & price is no object, go for it.

    I think the customers who are most pleased are the match shooters. Where a fraction of an inch makes the difference between winning & losing, their work can make the difference.

    On the other hand, if all you want to do is make a service grade rifle a little nicer, there are many others who can do an adequate job for a lot less money.

    You might want to check out Dean's Gun Restorations, too.

    I've been shooting a M1A perless from Fulton for about seven years now. I had my Springfield Supermatch upgrade to the perless when I shot the barrel out. The Fulton rebuild is just the best dammed semi auto I have ever shot in my life. Everyone who has shot it is just blowen away with the accuracy and workmanship. The price and wait for the rifle was heavy, but well worth it.

    I have shot the perless AR-15 and Garand's in 308 and 30-06, they are all just as wonderful. The AR may be more accurate than my M1A, but not by much.

    I've shot the M1A many times at 1000 yards and the only bad part of the rifle is the operator. I haven't made very many matches in the last four years because of my job. I also own a 40X in 308 and always have a hard time figuring which rifle to use for a match. The M1A wins out most of the time.

    I just can't say in words how much I love that rifle. Think about going first class with you Garand and have them update it to a perless. Also think about going 308 with it. I thought it functioned smoother than the 30-06 and returned to target quicker on the rapid fire stages. If you have the time and money, go for it.

    After buying a Federal Ordinance preban M1A I joined a forum a Yahoo to which Dr. Walt Kuleck also belongs. This guy is a higher up at Fulton Armory if not the owner (he's a modest type) and a for real PhD in aerospace if memory serves. He has written at least three books on military rifles and is an authority on the M1 and M1A.

    He advocates rather subtly for FA and gives his honest opinion on FA's competitors. Maybe the best way to judge is by reading wha the other members say about FA arms. That is that, since SA went bankrupt in Mass. and started up in Illinois or wherever they are now, the only one to buy is Fulton Armory.

    As for mine, Walt informed me that he or another associate took some 7 or 8 FO receivers and found the firing pin retraction helix out of spec in all. I wouldn't know where to look for this part of the receiver let alone how to measure it. I wished I'd waited and bought a FA standard for twice what I paid for the FO.

    I have yet to try out a FA M1A but will own one soon. Maybe will save up for a Peerless. In short, FA is about as good as it gets, better than finding an old SA even. They are scientists and experts.

    I might add that one thing that convinced me is that Walt himself told me which AR 15's to buy and didn't try to hard sell me on FA, just gave me an objective opinion of what is good and what is bad. He's not desperate for business.
