people like sks's???
i've noticed alot of people like the sks's. i always thaught they were cheap rifles, is there anything special about them? what can u hunt with the 7.62X39mm cartridge?. how accurate are they?

TheSKS carbines are currently inexpensive but once upon a time (20+ years ago) they were quite rare and very expensive in this country, true collectors items. You can hunt anything with a 7.62X39 that you can hunt with a .30-30 so that would include most species of deer. I continue to read occassional postings from a few members who claim fantastic accuracy from their modified SKS carbines but the reality is that most offer only typical military accuracy which means nothing spectacular. Right now ammo is very cheap and this alone makes an SKS a good buy for no other purposes besides plinking or as a pickup truck gun.

People like them because they are nice rifles at a bargain price. Not super accurate, but accurate enough. At least as accurate as the Mini-14, probably more accurate. Probably more accurate than the AK47. You can hunt anything with them you would feel comfortable hunting with a 30-30. Oh, except they are probably more accurate than most lever action 30-30's, like the Winchesters. Savage is an exceptional lever action, so that must be qualified. All in all, they are a very, very sturdy military rifle that has many applications.

They are reliable, somewhat accurate, ammo is cheap, and they are extremely reliabe. Did I mention they are reliabe? And cheap to boot. You can hunt deer with them, in states that allow. Just be sure you get hunting ammo, which is put out by almost every major ammo producers. 0 -

7.62mm = .30 caliber exactly. Use a 122 gr HP from Wolf. Wolf is fine for a REAL rifle.[^]

my 13yr old son has taken a couple white tails every year for the last 4 years with his sks,he started shooting it as his first higher powered rifle because of the low recoil and he has kept shooting it because of his confidence in it.I have a safe full of good rifles but its his choice rifle to hunt with,,,,,,,plus plinking ammo is CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP.he liked his so well I have bought 4 more of the yugo's for the other kids around here to shoot,cant beat them for a $100 a pop

Where can you get a Yugo SKS in good condition for $100.00? Matching numbers and a shiny bore is going to cost you $169.00 minimum, I think.

Shiney bore is reasonalbly important, but for a shooter, no need for matching numbers. If I spent $150 of more for an SKS, I'd never shoot it. I'd buy a $100 version to shoot.
I have only owned four SKS rifles, don't own any now. Always end up selling them. Not as though I don't like them. It's just I like other rifles better. I would not mind owning ten or twenty of them in the future. Maybe not all at the same time. If I bought one of the "new, unissued" versions I wouldn't shoot it. That would be one to stash back. I'd just drop another $100 or so in one I could shoot, and avoid the guilt of spoiling a virgin.

I have 3 SKS's that i purchased through a friend who ordered them in quantity (like 10 at a time or however many you can get with a single 4478 form) and they were $89.95 plus FFL handling fees, basically $100... and they DID have matching serial numbers and 2 of the three didn't look like they had ever been shot, or even out of the cosmoline.. the third one is still in the cosmoline. i put fire sights on the gun (what a cool thing those are). for $2000 you could get 10 SKS, and more ammo than 10 guys can carry... a war party.0 -

yup... I bought 2 crates of Yugos for $89 each and they were unissued with accessories like mag pouches, oilers, slings, etc. 0
