There seems to be better and much more powerfull ammo today, whe shooting from pistols I notice that almost every brand seems to have a different color when fired? I tried about five different types of 22 mag in my revolver and some were blue-white others were an orange was it the short barrell or what? even some of the same brands were of a different color? as in the Winchester, the Dynapoint and Super X seemed completely different, then in the 38 the Silvertip ammo was a blue white color? on some ballastic tests through some wet phone books there was a big difference in results?????????? The 1903 22Auto was Wichester's first autoloader. It is NOT 22LR caliber. The caliber is 22Auto. Think it may have been their first cartridge designed especially for smokless powder. The cartridge is slightly larger than a 22LR diameter wise. and the bullet may also be somewhat different. The Win Model 63 was developed from the 1903 pattern, for using the 22LR round. The '03 is an obsolete round and hasn't been mfg'd for many years, although Winchester did make a special run of the ammo a few years back, and it can still be found occasionally on the online auctions. Old Western Scrounger may still have a small stock but it is pricey :insane: Buck and a half a round . These are nice old rifles for collectors but not usually used as shooters.

22WRF gives good information.
This is the 22 Winchester Automatic and was only used in the 1903 semi-loading rifle and was dropped from factory Winchester production in the 1970's. The rifle has been obsolete since 1932. It shouldn't be chambered with a current 22LR and vice versa. It was developed in the days of both blackpowder and smokeless powder. Its design was to prevent use of a blackpowder cartridge in a smokeless semi-auto to keep the action from fouling. Power is on a par with the 22LR.
The cartridges are now collectors items. I have several in my collection.
