1897 Winchester question
Did they ever use balck powder in this shotgun or was it always smokless? thanks

I don't suppose that any 97s(1897s)were ever chambered for 3" shells? I have never seen nor heard of one, but there's lots I have never seen or heard, so that don't count for much. Thanks for any help 0 -
The 1897 replaced the 1893 model when smokless powder started being used. So, yes, you are correct that the 1897 was intended for smokless powder loads.

We first must define who "they" really is... If by the term "they" you are referring to the shooting public (a.k.a. the individual owners of the early Model 1897s), then the answer is most assuredly "Yes", black powder shells were used in them. If you are defining "they" as the Winchester Repeating Arms Co., then the most appropriate answer would be "No".
As the previous respondent stated, the Model 1897 was introduced (as a replacement for the Model 1893) as a direct result of the "new" smokeless powder shells that were recently introduced to the shooting public. Many old timers did not immediately give up on shooting black powder shells, even though they owned a "modern" shotgun. What Winchester did do, was quietly perform a quasi recall of all Model 1893s by offering to replace them with a brand new Model 1897 free of charge. What precipated that event/decision was the suddenly high number of Model 1893s being returned for repair due to failures induced by shooting smokeless powder shells in them.
