Removing Rust Spot on Heirloom
I have a family heirloom that went neglected for a while. Sat in a closet of a relative going unloved. Remington Model 12-C, octagaonal barrel, was told it has "mountain" front site. It's in pretty good shape, but has a couple of small patches or red/orange rust on the barrel. Otherwise, bluing is original, probably an 85% gun. What do I do about these areas of damaging rust?

Breakfree or gun oil and very lightly go over the areas with 0000 steel or brass wool to remove the rust. Keep it well oiled. 0 -
I have an old pellet gun that had some rust on the barrel i just took some hopps bore cleaner and used that.

The best stuff I've found for surface rust is Rotanium Rid Rust. It's watery, put it on with a brush and lightly brush with a bronze brush. May need a couple applications and works like magic.
I can't find it now, it was made by Premier Industrial Corp of Cleveland, but that company was bought by a British company, don't remember their name.
I searched for it on the internet and found what must be it and it's made in Norway.

I use Kano Kroil Oil. Put it on the rust spot and let it sit for a day, reapply a few times. Use some 0000 steel wool and if the rust didn't pit you will still have the blueing left. Hoope's works the same way, but not quite as good.

Be sure and take note of the suggestions for using oil with the steel wool. Dry steel wool will remove bluing. The thing you want to be careful about is not removing any of the blue. That old rifle, if the blue is original, would have had the rust blue process. Chemical rust removers may damage the blue. 0 -
I use the copper penny method. Make sure it is a COPPER penny, not one of the newer zinc pennies. Copper is harder that rust, softer than steel. 0 -
might try Flitz metal polish also. It should remove the rust without removing the bluing. 0 -
Many thanks guys! Do these methods work for surfaces other than blue? Such as parkerized or mag phosphate and similar surfaces?

The method I've used on a couple of my dad's guns is "old school" ... WD-40 and aluminim foil ... very similar to the copper penny method..
