.330 Dakota vs. .338 Mag

Hey anyone,

What's the difference between a .330 Dakota and any .338 Mag? Stopping power--Distance with comparable loads---And anything else you experts might think is important to a newcomer.

Trying to buy an all-purpose American big game and African plains gun.

How about bear hunting on this continent? Which one? Neither?

    330 Dakota is a 340 WBY(give or take roughly 50-75 FPS) without a belt but yet short enough to fit in a standard length action. Parent case is the 404 Jeffery. Big problem using this as a cartridge to hunt outside of North America(even in 90% of NA) would be the lack of ammo if your's was unlucky enough to get lost by an airline. 338 Win. Mag ammo should be quite accessable world wide. 340 WBY on a limited bases.

    While there is nothing wrong with any of the .338 Magnums including the .330 Dakota, I would look into the .375 H&H since you include African plains game. This may a traditional solution but it is noted for being one of the very best for the game you intend to hunt. It is not overpowdered for NA, quite to the contrary as it will be perfect for the larger elk, moose and protection against the potential bear. It can be loaded with ease for flexibility of lighter to even the heaviest of loads. It is also noted for accuracy.

    The .330 is a proprietary cartridge and Dakota rifles are very pricy. If you like .338" calibers but want more horsepower than a .338 Win mag, I would suggest the .338 Rem. Ultra Mag. It will duplicate the ballistics of the .330 Dakota, .340 Weatherby and .338 Lapua but can be had in a more affordable Remington M700. The only .338 cartridge that can out perform the .338 RUM or any of these others is the Lazzeroni 8.59mm Titan.

    Warning: The Remington Ultra mags have pretty fierce recoil, especially in .338 and .375 caliber (I have a .375 RUM)

    It's easy to spot liberals-they are the ones who have no assets to protect and need every handout they can get. They have forbeyed themselves ascendence to a productive lifestyle.
