Carcano Ammo / Scope Question
I have a Carcano and have been using 6.5 x 55 ammo by Norma and am seeing a lot of ammo on the auctions that are 6.5 x 52. Is it possible to use this ammo in my rifle? If so, how safe is it? And will it do any damage in the long term?
Also, I am using a 1" Weaver side mount for my scope. My question is, is there another mount or way of mounting the scope that will not interfere with the loading of the clip?

Your talking about apples and oranges. The 6.5 x 55 ammo is normally used in Swedish Army rifles, i.e. M-94, M-96, M-38 etc.
The 6.5 x 52 ammo is used in various models of Italian Army rifles, M-1891, M-91-24, M-91-38 etc.
Even though both cartridges of the above military Rifles are 6.5mm Caliber, there not interchangable.
Graf & Sons www.grafs.com is the place to get Swedish & Italian Ammo. They sell it a heck of a lot cheaper then the price you pay for Norma.

I'm not sure that I want to hear how you have been using 6.5x55 ammo in your Carcano. If you take a look at the drawings, it should be clear that the 6.5 x 55 will not or at least, should not chamber in the Carcano. This is not a believable scenario.

Somehow, I don't think that you are using 6.5x55. Was that just a typo? I don't want to upset you, because if you can get the bolt closed on a Carcano while chambering 6.5x55, you are one strong dude!

Hello, Would 6.5 x 54 MS chamber. I picked up a box of Norma primed empties that was marked loaded for 6.5 Carcano??

Venator, if you can fire 6.5x55 in that Carcano, put the damn rifle on the wall. The chamber and mechanisms are ***WAY*** too sloppy to be safe, especially where the Swede is a more powerful cartridge in the first place.
oldammo, the head and bodies of the two Mannlicher designs are nominally equivalent, but the shoulder and OAL on the x54 is much different. *IF* the x54 brass has been cut back to 2.065" nominal, *IF* the brass has been full length resized in a 6.5x52 tool to dramatically reduce the shoulder, *IF* the neck has been reamed on the inside to bring the thickness into spec and (probably) if the brass was then fire-formed, it would likely be OK. To take it on the say-so of a hand labeled box is not conducive to a long and happy life.
I formed a *lot* of brass into obsolete / obscure / exotic cases for clients when I had my loading business. It can be a tedious process and I would always stain the bases to alert potential users beyond the original buyer that there was something unusual about the brass. At one time I tried staining the rounds with stripes, etc. but that wasn't successful. I digress . . . the bottom line is that unless you are absolutely certain of the provenance of reformed brass, you must be certain to check all dimensions very carefully - including neck wall thickness!

OK, I was told the correct ammo for this gun when I purchased it was 6.5 x 55 Carcano. Now looking at the box, the one I bought when I bought the gun. It only says 6.5 Carc. It is Norma brand No. 16537. 9.0 grams, 139 grain.
I bought this gun about four years ago and still have 6 rounds from the original box of ammo. Moving back and forth from California to Kentucky puts a crimp in ones shooting and hunting.
Thank you for making me aware that 6.5 x 55 is not the correct measurement. Now it should be much easier to obtain ammo, and hopefully at a more reasonable price. I paid $29.75 for a box of 20 rounds. Is that par for the course?0
