shotgun...deer hunting HELP
looking for any suggestions for a shotgun to be used as a deer hunting shotgun. in the past, ive only used smooth bore 12ga. SBE. im looking for something different this coming season. any suggestions on gauge/make/model...whatever is appreciated. again, i know there is no 'perfect' choice, just looking for what you know and use. thanks in advance.

Just buy rifled barrel for the shotgun you already have a buy some 3" rifled slugs and youll be set. If you dont have a gun that you can get a barrel for try the remington 870 or mossberg 500. theyre pretty cheap and you can get a ton of stuff for them! Good Luck!

well a slug barrel for my SBE is going to run me around $500 + ....so i figured buying new would be just as good....and maybe even cheaper [:0]

for a reasonable price slug gun , go with a Remington 870 express deer gun , get the one with the wood stock and matt finish , you really have 3 choices with it comes to barrels ,
#1 smooth bore with rifled sights , good to a max of 100 yards ,
#2 fully rifled barrel with rifled sights , good for 150 yards or how ever far you can use open sights for ,
#3 or a fully rifle barrel with a cantilever scope mount, this one cost the most but with the right combo of scope and slugs should put you out to a max of 200 yard s
Or go with the #2 and put a saddle mount on the receiver with a good scope
if you live any where close to LaCrosse Wi you should check out Gander Mountain , they have a few good used slug guns on hand

I have a remington 870 express and I love it. This shotgun just feels right to me and thats whats important. With the fully rifled barrel and good sabots the gun shoots great. The only thing i'd do different is get the cantilever barrel and a good scope. Best of luck to you. 0 -

Get a remington 870 its about $250 at wally world. you can buy a rifled barrel for about a $150

I too, am from People's Rep. of MN and have used an 870 Express with the rifled barrel. It works to change out barrels, but bought mine to keep it together as you will probably need to resight if you remove barrel, maybe even with the cantilever. The cantilever barrel is really the way to go if you can afford it, but I don't know if Rem offers it on an express. I just bought a Marlin 695, syn. stock, ported bolt slug gun slightly used at Gander Mountain for about $135. When I read a test when Browning Abolt, Rem 870, Marlin Bolt and Savage Bolt gun were tested for accuracy, the Marlin and Savage ran right with the Abolt, except in price. You might look around and see what you think. Also, you will need to spend some $ on good glass. Weaver, Burris, Leopold as a slug gun recoil will take its toll on mounts and reticles if not a good one. 0 -
I use a Winchester 1300, mine has a smooth bore deer barrel and I have a Simmons 4x shotgun scope on it , works really good with Super X rifled slugs, I think they come with a factory rifled barrel now if you want to shoot Sabots,,or here in IL you can hunt with a muzzeloader and handgun also, if you can that's something different,I dont know if you have that option though,Mike 0 -
After forty years of shotgun deer hunting,I've settled on the H&R single shot 20 gauge with the heavy barrel. With partition gold ammo, 200 yd shots are common and deadly accurate with a good rest. 0 -
i picked one of these up last summer in 12 guage it shoots great.
