difference between "ball ammo" and regular?

Sorry for asking such a newbie question, but can anyone explain to me what "ball" means in "ball ammo"? I'm about to pay for 10 cases of American 32ACP ball ammo, and I hope it will work well in my Mauser 1914 ...

  Your pre W W I vintage Mauser was specifically made to function with full metal jacketed ammo, i.e. "ball ammo".
  
  "Hollow point" and various other types of "expanding" personal defense ammo were developed in the US, 70 some years after your pistol was made.
  
  It's been my experience that some of the small blowback operated, sem-auto pistols are "fussy" about their ammo preferences. I wood run a couple of boxes of the ammo through your pistol, before buying the stuff by the case.
