Competitve distance shooting...what's a good gun.
I would like to get into entry level competitive distance shooting. The only rifle I have is an SKS...not too good for that (although I can get 1 inch groups at 100 yards with it). I understand that .308 is the best caliber (arguably) to go with. I don't have a ton of money...looking to get the best bang for the buck if you know what I mean.

Also look at ethier savage, reminton 700ADl or even look for a used guns.

Without breaking the 1k barrier, If you wish to get new. Look at a savage 112 BSS. OR
If you can find a used Rem. 40x that's been tweeked in a good way, you will have a tack driver. Not to pass up some of the others, That would be my first choice.
Just keep in mind most can be worked on for a few bucks that can make great improvments. Stock, triggers, Glass etc.

A friend that shoots competetively said to get a Rem 700 or Savage 110 tactical. I wanted to ask here for verification/other suggestions. Westlund pretty much repeated what he said. As for breaking the 1K barrier, I'm actually looking at $500 as the hard barrier. I know the Savage is under that, maybe the Rem as well.

Any national match Rife will do. Mostly in .308 some in 30/06. M-1 or M1A configuration but not all. Do some home work and life will be fine for you. [8D]

I'm still learning the terminolgy, let me explain. I was shooting at a 6 inch orange circle with a 2 inch center circle with a borrowed scope on my sks. I fired two clips (20 rounds) inside the middle circle. Pretty much one big hole, the largest difference between discernable holes was less than 1 inch (inside this 2 inch circle). The guy with me said "Good one inch grouping." What would be the correct assessment of the group?

1 inch groups with an SKS is unheard of, the rifle isn't capable of such accuracy, but I wasn't there so what do I know. 0 -
i must really be po-folk, my bench shooting was with an old rem .222 with a 4 pwr scope and up to 100 yd did fairly well with my sav.'99 in .303 sav. (1-11/2" groups with open sites)
guess if i try any more of that stuff ill have to get a different rifle!0 -

Is what I explained a true 1 inch group? Like I said I may be wrong with the terminology. I probably need to understand this kind of thing as I start working on getting to a competitive level. I can shoot the heck out of a rifle, not so much with a hand gun. But back in '82 I could throw a pigskin a quarter mile. [:p]

the reason fathers, mentors, coaches, and instructors are not always liked or appreciated is they have a way of cutting to the chase without entertaining the bs. so, before i waste time telling you what gun you need, let me just be a daddy to ya and listen up...you dont win trophies or matches, you buy them. that means..if you are going to compete with a REAL desire to win and not be embarrassed every time you show up at the range, save up, and get a gun that will do the job sparing nothing. awards cost money. the old 'i cant afford it' is an old hat. if you cant afford it, maybe yourenot ready. you dont show up at football practice dressed in a too-too. champions must learn on a gun that will not offer the shooter the option of blaming the gun. if you have a cheap gun and practice good solid habits, youre wasting bullets. save up and get a GREAT gun and win.
with that said, remember this grasshopper, its not the gun thats being tested at a match...its a match where gunsmiths challenge each others knowledge hoping someone good enough will shoot it and prove their superiority for them. rub elbows with the winners and find out who the hot tamale is at your range and buy one of his guns and let him tell you whats best.
now with that said, you must decide either gas or bolt, iron or scope.

bolt? HEAVY BBL REM 700, WIN70, or a CUSTOM BUILT GUN FROM THE GROUND UP.

Although I appreciate the input, bobski, I have to completely disagree with you on that. The skills get it done, the gun is just a tool. I've gone skeet shooting with a Mossberg 500 and an old Stevens 20ga and outshot everyone else, most with Citori's and Red Labels. My brother in law thinks like you, buys all the money guns. With my cheap-o SKS I've already blown his arse away on short ranges. I just need a new tool that has a farther reach, thus this thread. If your a good carpenter, does a $1000 hammer drive the nails better than a $5 hammer? Nope.

guns and hammers are two totally different things. if the skills get it done, you could work out a mathematical formula to set the angle to get the 7.62x39 cartridge to lob into the x-ring at 1000 yards and not get a new gun. or you could take the good advice and not get a cheap gun, because you will be competing against people with as good or better skills with better guns than you will have. so when it comes down to it, the better gun you will buy, the better chance you will have against shooters that are your caliber. the remington police models are relatively cheap and i have seen some nice groups with them.

That is where you are wrong Shoff. You can buy a bone stock Savage 10FP with a Choate stock for 535.00.
And this is what mine does.
I think 3 shot groups are great, but I use 5 shot groups for data. First 3 on this group went through the same hole at 300 yards. I got so excited and the next two opened up a lil. This is with a 7 to 8 mph tail wind at the firing line and a lil 3mph left to right at the 300 yard line.
Sweaver, I am like you. I do not have a lot of money but I believe in PAY FOR PERFORMANCE. You can go out and spend thousands on a custom rig and not have it shoot for bababooey.
308 is a good way to go due to the price of reloading for it and there is a TON of data out there for it. It will get you out to 1K with no problems if you have the correct optics. The wind will kick it's a55 at 1000 but that's just part of the game. Next step would be a 300 win (which will be my next gun in a Savage)
And what Shoff said about how you can't win with one. That's BS. You can give a hack a 5000.00 bench gun and he would still shoot like crap. Or you give a guy a rifle with some skill a gun and he will work miracles. [:D]0
