4X and definitely 6X are too much magnification. I have a 458 that has a Leupold 2.5X. Why put a scope on it? I would put a fixed power as opposed to a variable scope.

I would think for a rifle like that you would want to use folding leaf open sights. 0 -

A ex. scope would be the 1-4 leupold VX-11 they have lots of eye relief, which is what you want.

Any low power scope 1.5X4-6 will be fine. Eye relief between brands varies, get one with a lot so you don't get scope eye. The recoil off the .458 is stout but not as sharp as some big bore guns. Any quality scope will hold up ok. 0 -
1.5X5 or 1 3/4X6 Leupold or any other quality manufactured scope will work just fine on your 458. Phil Shoemaker(a brown bear guide in Alaska) uses a 2 3/4 powered scope on his. He has also shot a moose with it at 400 yards and the 400 grain Barnes X bullet. I have used variable powered scopes on many of my large caliber forearms with no problems. It's better to have that extra power when you need than to not have it when you need it.

I have a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5 on my Weatherby 460. A 1.5 or 2.5 fixed power would also be good for your use. A straight 4X or 6X might not be the best idea.

Howdy from Texas! My 1964 Remington 700 in 458 came to me with a 1964 model Redfield 2 3/4 fixed. Idiot that I am, I put a 3X9 on it, took it out with 500 grain HOT loads, and immediately dented my forehead. I would definately stick with as long an eye relief as you can get, which probably does mean a lower power scope. Besides, these guns weren't meant for extreme ranges on bunny size game. 0
